Garfieldis easilyone of the most recognizable pop-culture icons in history, and the reason why is abundantly clear: he’s absolutely hilarious. While there is no shortage ofGarfieldmedia in the form of live-action films, animated features, and television series, the iconic orange cat got his start in theGarfieldcomic strip series created by Jim Davis in 1978- and that strip is still going strong today.

Davis has been making people laugh with hisGarfieldstripsfor nearly half a century, which is a mountain of comics to read through. How can one truly appreciateGarfieldwhen there are so many strips they’ll likely never read? Well, the best way is to take it one month at a time, and right now is the perfect time to take a look back at anentire month’s worth ofGarfieldstrips that just turned 30- including Davis’ best no-dialogue comic. And out of them all, these are the10 funniestGarfieldcomics published in September 1994!

10Jim Davis’ Funniest No-Dialogue Comic Pits Garfield Against One Dangerous Frog

Garfield- July 14, 2025

Garfield has a tendency to tangle with characters he shouldn’t, especially if he thinks little of them (which includes pretty much everyone), and in this case, one particularly dangerous frog proves how foolish Garfield is for doing so. WhenGarfield walks past a sign that warns passers-by “Beware of Frog”, Garfield is confused, and doesn’t pay any mind to the frog that is sitting right next to the sign. Then, the frog trips Garfield, and the arrogant cat lands right on his face.

Whatever was going through Garfield’s mind, the end result was the same: one hilarious comic strip that didn’t need any dialogue to be funny.

A dog calling Garfield too fat to want to eat.

Perhaps Garfield thought the sign was a typo, thinking it was supposed to read, “Beware of Dog”, and that the frog sitting next to it was just a weird coincidence. Whatever was going through Garfield’s mind, the end result was the same: one hilarious comic strip that didn’t need any dialogue to be funny.

9Garfield Encounters an Incredibly Vicious Dog (but Not in the Way You’d Expect)

Garfield- July 03, 2025

Seemingly not having learned his lesson with the frog, Garfield approaches a chained up dog who looks like he could eat him. Garfield asks the dog point-blank, “Aren’t you going to try to get me?” and the dog replies, “I’m cutting down on the fat in my diet”. Garfield, a bit offended, says, “You are vicious”.

10 Garfield Comics That Showed His Softer Side (Against His Will)

Garfield loves pranking Jon and being mean to Odie, but he also has a softer side (even if he doesn’t like to show it), & these 10 comics prove it!

It’s not that this dog couldn’t get Garfield, but thatGarfield was simply too fat for the dog to consider him appetizing. By telling Garfield that, this dog was being more vicious than if he’d just tried to kill Garfield right then and there, just not in the way readers would expect.

8Garfield Solidifies His Place as the Comic Strip Medium’s Biggest Jerk

Garfield- August 01, 2025

Garfield has always been a giant jerk, mostly due to the fact that he’s either insulting or pranking Jon and Odie on a near daily basis. However, this comic strip proves that those he lives with aren’t the only ones in danger of facing Garfield’s wrath. WhenGarfield walks up to another chained up dog, he just calls him ugly. When the dog growls and snarls, obviously offended, Garfield justifies his statement by saying, “As if it’s my fault”.

There’s no rhyme or reason for Garfield’s actions in this comic. He simply saw a dog he knew couldn’t attack him, insulted him, and then made another snide remark when the dog reacted. In other words,Garfield was just being a huge jerk, perhaps even the biggest jerk in the history of the comic strip medium.

Garfield- July 20, 2025

As Jon is simply sitting in his own home, minding his own business, Garfield bears his sharp teeth and brandishes his even sharper claws, ready to attack him for seemingly no reason. But then, without even turning around, Jon says, “I have candy”. At that point, Garfield sheathes his claws, and that toothy snarl turns into a giant grin, as he’s more than willing to give Jon affection for the promise of candy (even though he was about to inflict pain).

The beginning of this comic proves that it’s easy to be on Garfield’s bad side, as Jon achieved that just by existing. However, by the end of the comic, it’s clear that it’s even easier to get on his good side, asall one has to do is promise him food and Garfield will become their best friend.

6Garfield Only Consumes Media that Agrees with Him

Garfield- June 07, 2025

As Garfield is sitting in his chair, flipping through the channels on the television, he comes across a number of programs that he clearly has no interest in. The first is a doctor’s report, which is about to tell Garfield what he shouldn’t do (whatever that is) before Garfield quickly turns the channel. The second is the report on a study that finds… something Garfield isn’t interested in, since he turns the channel.

Garfield, like most people, only wants to consume the media that agrees with him, and chooses to ignore anything that goes against his lifestyle

Then, Garfield finally lands on a program he is interested in: “A Salute to Bacon”.Garfield, like most people, only wants to consume the media that agrees with him, and chooses to ignore anything that goes against his lifestyle - even if that information may have proven beneficial.

5The Implication of This Garfield Joke is Shockingly Sinister

Garfield- Aug 22, 2025

Garfield has never liked Odie, and he makes his feelings clear by constantly bullying the pup any chance he gets. However, this time, it seems Garfield took things way too far. Garfield walks up to Jon in an uncharacteristically chipper mood with a shovel in his hand, saying, “Bet you’re able to’t find Odie!”. When Jon asks where Odie is, Garfield replies, “Ah, ah, ah… no hints!”.

This comic feels like a cursed image.Garfield seemingly killed Odie, buried him, and then cheerfully flaunts that foul deed in Jon’s face, so happy about what he’s done that he can barely contain himself. Garfield’s even playing a weird riddle game with Jon about where Odie is, making the whole thing so much more sinister. Obviously, Garfield didn’t kill Odie, but the implication of this joke is utterly skin-crawling.

4Garfield Has Never Experienced Ice Cream Melting (It Never Lasted that Long)

Garfield- August 09, 2025

Jon and Garfield are enjoying a couple of ice cream cones together, and Jon tells Garfield to eat the ice cream quickly before it melts. Before Jon even finishes his sentence, Garfield throws the entire cone down his throat, eating the sweet treat in a single bite. Garfield then ponders what Jon had just told him, asking, “Ice cream melts?”.

Garfield’s question reveals that he’s never seen ice cream melt before. Why? Because it never lasted that long.Whenever Garfield had ice cream in front of him, he’d eat it faster than it could ever melt, and this is something he’s been doing his entire life. So, naturally, he would be shocked by the idea that ice cream could melt, as he had never seen that happen with his own eyes.

3Jon Cruelly Shows Garfield His Own Fate (If He Doesn’t Stop Being a Glutton)

Garfield- August 19, 2025

While Garfield is eating from his food bowl, Jon sneaks up behind him with an inflated balloon and pops it. The noise is so loud and sudden that Garfield spits out the food that was in his mouth (something he’s generally reluctant to do). Jon then says to Garfield, “The sound of an exploding cat”, and Garfield replies, “My worst fear!”.

10 Times Garfield Crossed Universes With Other Beloved Comic Strips

Garfield has been a beloved cartoon character for more than 40 years, and in that time he has crossed over with many other comic strip characters.

It seemsJon was telling Garfield that if he kept guzzling food the way he has been his whole life, he would eventually pop- and it seems Garfield had also considered this possibility. There’s a reason this fate is Garfield’s ‘worst fear’, as it means that, one day, the food he loves so much may turn against him, resulting in his ultimate demise. And, if he doesn’t stop being a glutton, Garfield and Jon will both be right.

2Garfield is WAY Too Happy to See Jon’s Day Ruined

Garfield- July 01, 2025

When Garfield and Jon are standing on their front porch together one beautiful morning, Jon takes in the new day with a giant breath. Unfortunately,he also inhales a monarch butterfly, which sends Jon into a coughing fit that forces him back inside, all while Garfield silently mocks his pain.

Jon is one of the most hapless comic strip characters in history, meaning it takes a lot to make him happy, and not very much to throw him into a spiraling pit of depression. In other words, Jon’s day is absolutely ruined after the events of this comic, which is a real shame, especially because of how optimistic he was at the start - and Garfield just laughed at him.

1Garfield Decides to Put a Smile on Jon’s Face (Literally)

Garfield- July 11, 2025

It seems Garfield was just acting like a full-blown psychopath in September 1994, because this comic strip is seemingly pulled right from the playbook of DC’s Joker in its weird playfulness with sinister undertones.Garfield decides he’s going to put a smile on Jon’s face, so he literally draws a smile on Jon’s face, invoking his wrath. While this is nothing more than another harmless prank, the sight of Jon running after Garfield with what looks like two mouths - one frowning, the other smiling - is chilling. And the fact that Garfield put that other mouth there makes the entire scene feel even more hellish.

Garfield’s tone has been known to delve into a strange kind of darkness from time to time, and this comic strip is no exception

Garfield’s tone has been known to delve into a strange kind of darkness from time to time, and this comic strip is no exception, especially since it happened in the same month as the ‘dead Odie’ joke. And the fact that it’s strangely creepy only makes this strip even more hilarious, as that assuredly was not deliberate, but true all the same. Which is why this is one of the 10 funniestGarfieldcomic strips that just turned 30!

Garfield

Garfield is the central character in Jim Davis’s comic strip, which officially began in 1978 under the same name. Garfield is an orange tabby cat with a love of lasagna and a disdain for Mondays. He tends to torment his owner and dog while trying to secure more food - and quiet.
