Marvel’s 2024 movies and TV shows, both in theMarvel Cinematic Universeand inSony’s Spider-Man Universe, have included some of the franchise’s most heartbreaking and emotional quotes yet. 2024 was something of a slim year for Marvel’s superhero franchises, with only eight projects across two franchises releasing in total, and only oneMarvel Studios movie,Deadpool & Wolverine, hitting theaters. Nevertheless, 2024 was an incredibly poignant and emotionally-intense year for Marvel, with these eight projects including some beautiful and moving moments.

MCU

Marvel Studios excelled in 2024, withEcho, Deadpool & WolverineandAgatha All Alongbecoming huge successes for the MCU, whileX-Men ‘97marked a strong reintroduction to the X-Men team from the 1990s. The SSU, however, didn’t fare so well.Venom: The Last Dancewas well-received, but faltered at the box office, whileMadame WebandKraven the Hunterwere critical and commercial disasters, marking asorry end to Sony’s Marvel franchise. Even so,Marvel’s 2024 slate still managed to deliver some of these franchises’ most powerful heart-wrenching and gut-punching moments.

10“No, Billy, Sometimes Boys Just Die.”

Agatha Harkness In Agatha All Along Episode 8, “Follow Me My Friend/To Glory At The End”

Agatha All Along, Marvel Studios' most recent live-action project, quickly became one of the MCU’s most popular installments, thanks in part to the remarkably-written script and wonderful performances from the ensemble cast. The exploration ofAgatha Harkness' tragic backstorywas one of the primary storylines in the series, particularly concerning the death of her son, Nicholas Scratch. This was underlined after Agatha helped Billy Maximoff find a body for his brother’s soul in episode 8, “Follow Me My Friend/To Glory at the End,” as he questioned whether he was killing someone so his brother could live.

Billy Maximoff was portrayed by Joe Locke inAgatha All Along. This version is the reincarnated form of Julian Hilliard’s Billy Maximoff fromWandaVisionandDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, whose soul inhabited the recently-deceased body of Locke’s William Kaplan.

Agatha Harkness' simple reply of"No, Billy, sometimes boys just die"was truly touching, particularly since this was spoken in a moment of quietas Agatha was left alone in the finaltrial on the Witches' Road. Agatha remembered her son at this moment, taking his hair from her Three Goddess locket, which she then used to pass the final trial and return to Westview. This line showed her humanity more than most others, putting her vulnerability front-and-center, and this was genuinely moving.

9“When You Take On The Responsibility, Great Power Will Come.”

Santiago In Madame Web

Most agree thatMadame Webwas a horrible failure in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. The cringeworthy and awkward movie marked an unfortunately-disappointing superhero franchise debut for Dakota Johnson, but there was one moment inMadame Webthat stuck out as a genuinely heartfelt moment for Cassandra Webb. After traveling to Peru to meet Santiago, who had tried to save Cassandra’s mother years earlier, Cassie learns about her clairvoyance, which creates the opportunity for Santiago to deliver this twist on an iconic line associated with Spider-Man.

Marvel Just Changed Spider-Man’s ‘With Great Responsibility’ Line For The 2nd Time In 3 Years

The iconic words of Spider-Man - “With great power, comes great responsibility” - have been changed twice in three years by Marvel properties,

Originally a narrative caption in Marvel Comics, later spoken to Peter Parker by Uncle Ben, and finally delivered in full byAunt May inSpider-Man: No Way Home,“With great power, there must also come great responsibility"is perhaps the most iconic Spider-Man quote ever.Madame Websaw Santiago change this to"When you take on the responsibility, great power will come,“which effectively reverses the meaning of the quote.Comparatively worse, this still contributed toMadame Web’smost touching moment, particularly since it was delivered in the moments after Cassie was able to speak with her long-dead mother.

8“What Are Demons, But Reflections Of Our Fear & Shame?”

Storm In X-Men ‘97 Episode 6, “Lifedeath - Part 2”

Storm’s story in Marvel Animation’sX-Men ‘97was more emotional and powerful than most others, as she was stripped of her power in episode 2, “Mutant Liberation Begins,” yet manages to get them back ten-fold in episode 6, “Lifedeath - Part 2.“Storm re-obtaining her element-manipulation abilities involved her battling the Adversary, a personification of her darkest demons, creating the opportunity for her to deliver this poignant quote. The Adversary even received its name from this beautiful quote, as Storm noted that it’s better to embrace our demons than fight them.

Storm:What are demons, but reflections of our fears and shame? Things we bury within us, hide from loved ones, even as they poison our heart until we finally heal our adversary by embracing it.

Kraven the Hunter Poster

Alison Sealy-Smith reprised her voice role fromX-Men: The Animated Seriesas Storm inX-Men ‘97, bringing the god-like mutant to life once again in style. Not only is Storm one of the most powerful and popular X-Men members, butshe is also one of the gentlest and most tender, and this is proven in her desire to embrace her fears and transform them into her power, rather than battling them.Storm is set to appear inWhat If…?season 3, Marvel Studios’ final 2024 project, so hopefully she’ll bring this same power into the MCU proper.

7“You Were Always The Wrong Guy, Until You Weren’t.”

Laura In Deadpool & Wolverine

Deadpool & Wolverinemarked the return of several characters from 20th Century Fox’sX-Menuniverse, which has been dubbed Earth-10005 in the MCU’s multiverse. One of the most exciting wasDafne Keen’s Laura, a.k.a. X-23, who first appeared as a child in 2017’sLogan, while Hugh Jackman also returned, but portrayed a more-troubled variant of Laura’s father, Wolverine.Despite not being related, Wolverine and Laura shared an incredibly heartfelt moment around the campfire at the Resistance team’s hideout inDeadpool & Wolverine, which saw Laura urge Wolverine to join the fight against Cassandra Nova.

Wolverine stressed that he was the"wrong guy,“to which Laura replied with this beautiful line. This reminded audiences of how the original Wolverine was reluctant to take Laura to safety inLogan, but eventually decided to help her anyway, and even sacrificed his own life to ensure that her and her friends managed to survive. Laura’s words had the same impact onHugh Jackman’s new version of Wolverine, as he joined the fight and helped to save Deadpool’s universe, finding a family in the process, all thanks to this touching quote.

6“I Won’t Forget You, Buddy.”

Eddie Brock In Venom: The Last Dance

Viewers witnessed the final chapter in Sony’sVenomfranchise with the release ofVenom: The Last Dance, as the Symbiote sacrificed his life to defeat the Xenophages and ensure thatKnull remained imprisoned on Klyntar. The farewell between Venom and Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock was emotional, and while many may consider it cringe-worthy,it was lovely to see Brock remember his time with Venom in a somewhat-awkward montage at the end of the movie. This became a tender moment, however, as Brock looked out at the Statue of Liberty and stated that he’d always remember his alien friend.

I Can’t Believe Venom 3’s Trailer Showed A Key Finale Moment A Month Before It Released

After Venom: The Last Dance’s release, it’s become clear that the trailer featured carefully chosen moments from the Marvel movie’s ending.

The future of Eddie Brock and Venom has not been confirmed by Sony or Marvel Studios, so it’s very possible that"I won’t forget you, buddy"will be the last line audiences ever hear Tom Hardy’s Brock speak. There’s been speculation that, now that Sony is shifting its Spider-Man franchise plans,Venom could be integrated into the MCU proper, which would give even more meaning to this line.WhileVenom: The Last Dancehad its issues, theVenomfranchise was always Sony’s most popular, and this heartfelt goodbye proves why.

5“I Loved Being A Witch.”

Lilia Calderu In Agatha All Along Episode 7, “Death’s Hand In Mine”

Lilia Calderu’s time jumps throughoutAgatha All Alongwere finally explained and tied together in episode 7, “Death’s Hand in Mine.” This episode featured Lilia’s trial on the Witches’ Road, which was packed full of revelations for the 450-year-old Sicilian witch, including that Aubrey Plaza’s Rio Vidal is actually Death, “Teen” is the son of the Scarlet Witch and her life has been told out of sequence for good reason. This culminated in her tragic and emotional sacrifice, allowing the others to escape from the Salem Seven after Lilia proclaimed that she"loved being a witch.”

Death, a.k.a. Rio Vidal

Aubrey Plaza

With her quick wit, confidence and charisma, Lilia Calderu was one of the most beloved members ofAgatha Harkness' new coven inAgatha All Along. She spent a great deal of the series lamenting about how the world views witches and the ugly stereotypes surrounding her community, which made her demise and this beautifully-delivered line even more poignant, asshe"loved being a witch"despite this meaning society looked down on her. Lilia received a happy ending inAgatha All Along, a gentle, tender and badass goodbye, since she took the Salem Seven with her.

4"My Entire World Is Right Here In This Picture.”

Deadpool In Deadpool & Wolverine

Ryan Reynolds recently explained to Andrew Garfield inVariety’sActors on Actorsinterview thatDeadpool only ever becomes a main character when everything is taken away from him, and this was never more true than inDeadpool & Wolverine. Mr. Paradox and the Time Variance Authority wanted to move Deadpool into the MCU’s main timeline ofEarth-616 to allow Earth-10005 to be destroyed, which would include Deadpool’s entire family of nine people. He used a photo of this found family to explain his lying to Wolverine, though this didn’t go down so well.

Deadpool:This. This is why. Right here. Because if we don’t do something, they die. I don’t know anything about saving worlds, and why would I even care? Because my entire world is right here in this picture. It’s only nine people and I have no idea how to save it alone. I know how to f**k people up for money, but you, you… know how to save them! At least, the other Wolverine did.

Avengers 5 Concept Poster

Deadpool’s found family consists of Vanessa, Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Yukio, Dopinder, Shatterstar, Blind Al, Peter and Buck, nine people who Deadpool would seemingly be willing to lay down his life for. Their lives being on the line acted as the entire motivation behind theevents ofDeadpool & Wolverine, just as Vanessa alone did in 2016’sDeadpooland its 2018 sequel. This shows Wade Wilson’s humanity and shines a spotlight on the intense bonds and relationships he has with his friends, proving he’s a deeply emotional person, despite the comedy and violence.

3“To Give Life Means Nothing If I Cannot Protect It.”

Tuklo In Echo Episode 3, “Tuklo”

2024’sEchowas one of Marvel Studios' most experimental and interesting projects, as it marked the debut for theMarvel Spotlight bannerand focused on a little-known character who deserved more development after her introduction inHawkeye.Alaqua Cox was incredible as Maya Lopez, but it was Dannie McCallum’s Tuklo in the self-titled episode 3 who delivered this beautiful and poignant line. Tuklo, one of Maya’s ancestors in the 1800s, wanted to be a Lighthorseman, but her father rejected this request because of her gender, to which she replied with this line.

Marvel Studios' upcomingWonder Manseries is set to be the next project releasing under the Marvel Spotlight banner, so will likely only have loose connections to the wider world of the MCU.

Spider-Man Brand New Day Logo Poster

Echoput a huge amount of attention on female empowerment, as Maya Lopez found herself gaining superhuman abilities passed down through her maternal bloodline, which led back all the way to the first leader of theChoctaw Nation in the MCU, Chafa.Tuklo’s quote was backed up by her braiding her hair like a Choctaw warrior and riding out to save her father and the other Lighthorsemen from ambushing criminals. This was a thought-provoking and stylistic moment that explained more of Maya Lopez’s own power as a female warrior in the MCU’s present day.

2“I Wish I Could Say You’ll Die Alone, But It’s One Of God’s Best Jokes That You Can’t Die.”

Worst Wolverine In Deadpool & Wolverine

Shortly after Deadpool accidentally revealed that he lied to Wolverine with an"educated wish"and hoped to earn back his good faith by showing his photo of his found family, Hugh Jackman got the chance to really show off his acting chops. Wolverine didn’t relent, despite Deadpool’s pleas, and insteadtook the opportunity to really tear into Deadpool with a brutal and cutting monologue, expertly delivered by Jackman in the confines of the Honda Odyssey. This contributed to one ofDeadpool & Wolverine’smost memorable and intense moments.

Wolverine:You know what? You’re a fking joke. No wonder the Avengers didn’t take you. Or the X-Men. And they’ll take fkin' anyone. I mean, you are a ridiculous, immature, half-wit moron. I have never met a sadder, more attention-starved jabbering little prick in my entire life and that says a lot cause I’ve been alive for more than 200 fking years. And I’ll tell ya, that bald chick was right about one thing, you will never save the world. You couldn’t even save a relationship with a goddamn stripper, and motherfker I wish I could say you die alone, but it’s one of god’s best jokes that you can’t die, except that’s on all of us. You got nothing to say, Mouth?

01688840_poster_w780.jpg

You could hear a pin drop after Wolverine’s monologue, as Deadpool stays quiet and still for a few moments afterwards, perhaps shocked at just how brutal Wolverine was. This really gave Hugh Jackman the chance to show Wolverine’s anger and hatred, and proved exactly why it was the best idea to bring back Jackman asWolverine in the MCU’s Phase 5.This monologue is perfectly written, concise and condensed, and delivered by Jackman with such rage and animositythat it sends chills down the viewer’s spine.

1“The Name’s Gambit, Mon Ami. Remember It.”

Gambit In X-Men ‘97 Episode 5, “Remember It”

The most heartbreaking moment in any Marvel movie or TV show released in 2024 has to beGambit’s unexpected and shocking death inX-Men ‘97episode 5, “Remember It.“The title of the episode refers to Gambit’s last words, as he charges us the Wild Sentinel attacking Genosha with kinetic energy and blows it up after telling it to remember his name. Until episode 5, the Cajun X-Men hero had spent the series pining after Rogue, who finally chose Gambit over Magneto, who was also temporarily presumed dead after episode 5, just that little bit too late.

X-Men ‘97 Sets Up Gambit’s Return In His Darkest Form, Rewriting An Iconic Marvel Storyline

X-Men ‘97 episode 10 seemingly confirms that Gambit will return from the dead in season 2, albeit transformed into his darkest comic-book persona.

X-Men ‘97’sGenosha massacre adapted the events of Marvel Comics’E is for Extinctionevent from 2001, which saw Cassandra Nova send the Wild Sentinel to commit the mutant genocide. In the animated series, Bastion was behind these events, but it had the same impact, especially because of Gambit’s death. Gambit has been teased to return, though under Apocalypse’s control, inX-Men ‘97season 2, but his demise will go down in history as one of the most emotional moments in any Marvel franchise,Marvel Cinematic UniverseandSony’s Spider-Man Universeinclusive.
