Marvel’s Thunderbolts* Are Back in Action With an All-New Roster

The Winter Soldier and Black Widow Assemble an Unlikely Team

Currently, Bucky Barnes is leading a different group ofThunderbolts to take down Doctor DoominThunderbolts: Doomstrikeby Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, and Tommaso Bianchi. It now looks like he’ll be trading that roster for a new one that’s even more formidable. He and Black Widow alone have the fighting chops to take down their share of foes, but the other members push them to the next level. From Laura Kinney’s Wolverine to the Hulk, as well as more unpredictable additions likeEddie Brock and his bloodthirsty Carnage symbiote, there’s no shortage of skill in this updated roster.

Doctor Doom Really Likes One of the Thunderbolts, Teasing Their Future In the MCU

Doctor Doom and the Thunderbolts are about to make their MCU debut, which is why it’s interesting that Doom admits to liking one member in the comics.

Theoriginal Thunderbolts teamfirst united in 1997’sThe Incredible Hulk#449, and the standard rosters that have formed under that name since then have included reformed villains who operate on the government’s behalf. This new team subverts that convention by housing many characters who have already made the switch from bad to good, such as Black Widow. These characters can be more closely likened to anti-heroes than full-fledged villains - with the exception of Carnage, though Eddie Brock’s influence on him could change that. Thus, his inclusion in the Thunderbolts could be a sign of his potential redemption alongside his newfound teammates.

Interestingly, this comic will be incorporating the film’s asterisk in its title as well as in its imagery, as seen in Mark Bagley’s variant cover. The true meaning of this symbol within the Thunderbolts' story remains to be seen for both the MCU and the comics, but it suggests that the two iterations of the team may share something in common. Regardless of what this mysterious asterisk represents, readers can look forward to following the wildestThunderboltsline-up yet as Humphries and Lima bring them together this summer.
