After a flood of news from Lucasfilm over the last week or so, these upcomingStar Warsmovies have gotten some interesting updates (or, in some surprising cases, none whatsoever). There are manyupcomingStar Warsmoviesthat have been announced in the last few years, several of them during Star Wars Celebration 2023. In the last two years, though, shockingly few updates have been given regarding any of theseStar Warsmovies, so much so that it’s begun to be doubtful which will even happen.
This has become a larger issue amongStar Warsmovies and TV shows. After all, at present, there are only two confirmedupcomingStar Warsshows—Andorseason 2 andAhsokaseason 2—one of which (Andor) is being released just next month. Clearly,Star Warsis at an interesting turning point, which is likely to be clarified in much greater detail during Star Wars Celebration 2025 next month. As it stands, though, these areStar Wars'8 upcoming movies, ranked according to likelihood.

8I’m Not Holding My Breath For Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Movie
Even Kathleen Kennedy Said This Is An “If”
Back in 2020, it was revealed thatTaika Waititi had been tapped to work on an untitledStar Warsmovie. There were mixed responses to this news, as some believe Waititi’s unique style and humor, seen in projects likeThor: Love and ThunderandOur Flag Means Death, wouldn’t be a fit forStar Wars. I am of the opinion that Waititi would actually be brilliant at directing aStar Warsmovie and could be great for the franchise, but, sadly, Taika Waititi’sStar Warsmovie is feeling less and less likely all the time.
Taika Waititi’sStar Warsmovie is feeling less and less likely all the time.

AmongKathleen Kennedy’sStar Warsupdatesjust last week was a disappointing remark about Waititi’s movie. Kennedy explained:
“I keep waiting for Taika [Waititi], and he is working with another writer now. He’s so busy. I love him. I think if we ever do get a script from Taika, it’s going to be fantastic. I already saw a first act that I loved, but tying him down, it’s tricky.”

Given Kennedy said"if"she ever sees a script from Waititi,it’s clear that even the Lucasfilm executives are uncertain about the future of this project. This sadly makes sense, as it’s been five years of waiting for any updates, but it’s still a shame in my view, because I think it would be fascinating to see what Waititi would do with aStar Warsmovie.
7I Have Concerns About The Future Of Rey’s Star Wars Movie
I Was So Hopeful About This Movie… But Is It Even Happening?
Rey’sStar Warsmovie, rumored to be titledStar Wars: New Jedi Order, seemed all but guaranteed when it was announced two years ago, butthat future has become increasingly dubious. Updates were slow to come, but as that was true of multipleStar Warsmovies, it didn’t seem all that concerning. However, when Simon Kinberg’sStar Warstrilogy was announced, and it was revealed that Rey would have an Obi-Wan Kenobi role in those movies, this movie began to feel less likely than ever.
A much more concerning update on Rey’s movie was actually Kathleen Kennedy’s lack of update. She went step-by-step throughStar Wars’myriad upcoming projects in her recent interview, yet she made no mention of Rey’s new movie.New Jedi Orderhas seemed to be one of the most prominent ofStar Wars’upcoming movies, so, presumably, it would warrant a mention. The fact that the topic was left out entirely makes me very worried that we might not get this movie after all.

6I’m Holding Out Hope For Lando
Donald Glover Has Given Positive Updates, But Kathleen Kennedy Didn’t
Another movie that went without mention during Kennedy’s interview wasLando, which was meant to be led by Donald Glover. Glover would also have played the titular Lando Calrissian, just as he did inSolo: A Star Wars Story. Yet again, with its absence from Kathleen Kennedy’s roundup,Landofeels rather uncertain, although it frankly has for some time. Part of that also has to do with the reception ofSolo.
With its absence from Kathleen Kennedy’s roundup,Landofeels rather uncertain.
While Glover’s performance is certainly not to blame,Solocontinues to be seen as one ofStar Wars’worst movies. This may be impacting the level of interest inLandoand/or causing Lucasfilm to be hesitant about the movie. It’s a shame, because Lando Calrissian is an incredibleStar Warscharacter, and he’s certainly deserving of his own movie. Hopefully, this just wasn’t top of mind for Kennedy andLandois still in the works.
Lando: Cast & Everything We Know So Far
A Lando movie has been announced, but aside from the title Star Wars character, who else could appear? And when will the Solo spinoff take place?
5Dave Filoni’s Mandalorian Movie Feels Quite Likely
Less Is Known About This Movie, But It Still Seems Likely
AlthoughThe Mandalorian and Groguis easily the most well-known Mandalorian era movie coming down the line inStar Wars,Dave Filoni also has an untitled Mandalorian movie in the works. Very little is known about this movie, but it nevertheless still seems very likely. For one, as the Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer of Lucasfilm, Filoni has the ability to make such a movie happen if he wants it—and he certainly seems to want it.
In addition to that,Kennedy indicated that there are"other developments going on in that space,“referring to the Mandalorian era, and she suggested that this is really the franchise’s focus right now. That’s apparent in the recent and upcoming shows and movies alone, which have increasingly taken place during this period intheStar Warstimeline. The details may be foggy, but I’m still convinced this movie is happening.

4Simon Kinberg’s Star Wars Trilogy Seems Like A Sure Thing
The Skywalker Saga Evidently Has An Heir
I was genuinely surprised, as were many others, when it was revealed thatStar Warswas going to be getting a brand-new trilogy, but it wasn’t based on Rey’s new movie or even a Mandalorian project. Instead,Simon Kinberg will lead aStar Warstrilogy movie that is said to be the successor to the Skywalker Saga.Star Warshas long indicated that the Skywalker Saga ended withStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and it seems the franchise really is moving on.
What exactly that will look like remains to be seen. As mentioned, it has been said that these movies will see Rey in an Obi-Wan Kenobi role, suggesting they take place some time (presumably a significant amount of time) after the sequel trilogy. Kennedy did confirm that this trilogy is in the works during her interview, so these movies seem very likely to happen and will no doubt shape the future ofStar Wars.
3Dawn Of The Jedi (Thankfully) Remains Very Likely
This Is A Thrilling Upcoming Star Wars Movie
Like Rey’sStar Warsmovie,James Mangold’sStar Warsprequel movie, rumored to be titledStar Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, was announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023. I am particularly excited about this movie, as it is meant to reveal the origins ofthe Prime Jedi—the very first Jedi inStar Wars. So far, little has been explored on theStar Warsscreen that pre-dates the prequel trilogy. Among those projects areThe AcolyteandStar Wars: Young Jedi Adventures, but neither is set too far back in theStar Warstimeline (Yoda is in both, after all).
Dawn Of The Jedi: What We Know About The Star Wars Origin Movie
Set during the Dawn of the Jedi, James Mangold’s upcoming Star Wars movie will finally reveal the ancient history of the Jedi - and the Force itself.
I was getting worried about the future of this movie because I think it will be an absolutely fantastic addition toStar Wars. Like so many upcoming movies, though, there was very little clarification on whether the movie would be happening and what the timeline could be. Although details remain sparse, Kennedy did mention this as one of the upcomingStar Warsmovies in her interview, so I remain hopeful that this movie will indeed come to be.
2Shawn Levy’s Movie Is Further Along Than I Thought
This Is Said To Be Next In Line After The Mandalorian And Grogu
I was shocked to learn thatShawn Levy’sStar Warsmovie is expected to be released next afterThe Mandalorian and Grogu. In her roundup interview, Kennedy explained:
I’m producing theMandalorianmovie right now, and I’m also producing Shawn Levy’s movie, which is after that.
Very little is known about this movie even now, which made it seem very unlikely if not impossible that it would be the nextStar Warsmovie released afterThe Mandalorian and Grogu. In fact, many believed that would beNew Jedi Order, so this throws the future of Rey’sStar Warsmovie even further into question.
Currently, all that is really known about this movie is that Shawn Levy intends it to be a standalone. Obviously, that provides very little insight, including when the movie is set and which characters could be in it. Given Kennedy’s statement, perhaps plenty has been happening behind the scenes thatStar Warshas simply kept very tightly under wraps.
1The Mandalorian And Grogu Is Star Wars' Next Movie
This Is The Most Concrete Movie Plan Star Wars Currently Has
The Mandalorian and Groguis the most certain ofStar Wars’upcoming movies, and it would take a truly shocking event for that movie to be removed from the lineup. At present,The Mandalorian and Groguis the only upcomingStar Warsmovie with a confirmed release date. In fact, that release date—August 03, 2025—is only a little over a year away, suggesting that this movie is effectively guaranteed.
The Mandalorian and Groguis the only upcomingStar Warsmovie with a confirmed release date.
This is a smart move and a fairly safe bet forStar Wars. The Mandalorianhas proven incredibly popular, even with season 3 being a bit shakier in terms of audience responses, and titular leads Din Djarin and Grogu remain beloved in the franchise. With so much uncertainty, it makes sense thatStar Warswould rely onThe Mandalorian and Groguas the franchise’s next movie, but the futures of these seven other movies remain in varying degrees of limbo.
