The excerpt does show that he is currently in the infirmary, but he will likely not stay there long, forcing him to find a new way to help his friends and showcasing more of his individual journey outside the Iron Squad.
The two could then grow closer, with Jesinia acting as another support to Sawyer as he copes with the loss of his leg, giving him a chance to express his feelings and add to his arc.
