The Makino Kurumazuka Kofun is one of the first Kofun dungeons I came across inAssassin’s Creed Shadows, and I had no clue how to enter at first because I was playing as Naoe and hadn’t unlocked Yasuke yet. If you’re unfamiliar with the various activities and location challenges found across the massive open world ofAC Shadows,it won’t be immediately clear what you’re supposed to do at the Makino Kurumazuka Kofun. You’ll soon come to learn that each Kofun location can only be accessed by one character - either Yasuke or Naoe, but not both.

Kofuns inAC Shadowsare one of many location types that award Knowledge Points for completing various challenges. For the Makino Kurumazuka Kofun, you need to play as Yasuke to lift, throw, and move the oil jars inside and outside the Kofun. There are a few twists and turns throughout this Kofun, butthe prize for figuring out the puzzle is an excellent legendary weapon for Yasuke, the Blush of the Earth Bow. This is among the best legendary bows available in the early game, so be sure to complete this Kofun if you enjoy Yasuke’s ranged gear.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows: All Corrupt Daikan Locations & Rewards

The Corrupt Daikan target board is one of many you’ll encounter while playing Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and there are six targets to track down.

Once you’ve set it up, you can shoot the jar with either a bow or Teppo to gain access to the Kofun. If you arrived playing as Naoe and can’t figure out how to get inside, you’ll need to come back when you have progressed far enough in the story to play as Yasuke.Yasuke is the only one who can actually lift oil jars or move large crates, and you’ll need both to get through his Kofun puzzles.

Makino Kurumazuku Kofun Walkthrough

Makino Kurumazuku Kofun Entrance & First Chamber

As you first enter the Makino Kurumazuku Kofun, you may open the chest to grab the Ronin’s Katana of Bravery. From here, the path forward is blocked by a set of immovable crates, so you’ll need to head right, pushing the crate forward and following the path down to the first main chamber with a coffin in the middle.

Light candles as you make your way through the Kofun to keep track of where you’ve already been.

Kabukimono Leader Locations & Rewards In Assassin’s Creed Shadows

There are blocked entrances at the top of the stairs and to your right, and the only way to go at this point is forward by moving crates. Follow the path down into the water and around up the stairs until you reach the other side of the barricadewhere oil jars are conveniently placed.Blow up both barricades from the first chamber using these jars and head forward to the next room.

Makino Kurumazuku Kofun Second Chamber

As you leave the first chamber, there’s a fork. To the left is a chest containing some minor loot, butgo right to progress to a room with a pool of water. Swim across (there’s a chest if you dive), and head forward along the main pathway until you reach a room with some wooden boxes.Yasuke can charge through these for the next set of oil jars you’ll need access to. Grab one and head up to where you have to make a jump and blow up the barricade at the end of the bridge.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows: All Onryo Locations & Rewards (Shinbakufu Leaders)

There are 12 Onryo targets in Assassin’s Creed Shadows that comprise the main Shinbakufu leaders responsible for Naoe’s father’s death.

Heading forward, there’s ammo down the hallway to your right, otherwise slide/crawl through the opening and progress until you see the second chamber with a tightrope heading across.Yasuke is too heavy for the rope, so it’ll snapwhen you try to use it. Drop down into the room and head back through the tunnel, moving the crates and grabbing the loot. Slide the crates back to the second chamber and over so you can climb them to the other side.

Makino Kurumazuku Kofun Third Chamber

Head up the stairs to the third and final main chamber of the Kofun, where you’ll see two sets of stairs. The one to your right leads up to an entrance blocked by crates, while the one to the left leads seemingly nowhere. When you first enter the third chamber, you’ll see a crate directly in front of you. Pull this one back and slot it into the grooveso you can use it as a platform to jump across. Next, grab the other crate from under the bamboo platformand place it on the opposite side of the bamboo platform from the first crate.

From here, head back under the bamboo platform and follow the path around, down through the water and up the stairs until you reach the other side of the crates blocking the large set of stairs.Grab the oil jar in there and bring it with you, using the crates as platforms. While standing on the last crate, you’ll need to throw the oil jar toward the barricade and then jump over to the ledge.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows: All Kabukimono Leader Locations & Rewards

The Kabukimono target board and quest in Assassin’s Creed Shadows has eight primary targets scattered around the Izumi Settsu region.

Overall, the Makino Kurumazuku Kofun is a relatively easy Kofun that serves to orient you with how they work. It’s one of the first locations where Yasuke’s ability to move things will be essential. While later Kofuns inAssassin’s Creed Shadowsare more complex and have equally excellent rewards, the Makino Kurumazuku Kofun is a great primer for things to come.
