James Cameron provides a production progress update forAvatar: Fire and Ashwhich is good news for the fourth and fifth films. The writer-director’s franchise began in 2009 withAvatar, which has made $2.9 billion at the box office and still stands as the highest-grossing film of all time. The first sequel,Avatar: The Way of Water, didn’t come until 13 years later, but still made $2.3 billion, meaning that Cameron’s plans for three additional sequels, which are in various stages of production, includingAvatar: Fire and Ash, would be realized.

Now, ahead of its release later this year, Cameron has provided a production progress update onAvatar: Fire and Ashthat spells good news for the fourth and fifth films. During an interview withEmpire,Cameron says they are much further along onFire and Ashthan they were withWay of Waterat this same point in time, meaning they can sooner continue and begin working on the fourth and fifth films and likely avoid any future delays. It’s in strong shape, I think. We’ve doubled the number of shots finished at this stage of the game than we had on movie two [and] the films are about equal length. So that puts us well ahead of the curve, which is something I’ve never, frankly, experienced before. [It’s] a little bit less nightmarish. We’re getting to the point where we’re actually getting good at this.
