The ending of Prime Video’sBrotherssees everything work out for Peter Dinklage and Josh Brolin’s twin characters, though perhaps not in the way they expected. The crime comedy film follows Jady (Dinklage) and Moke (Brolin), twin brothers who have been partners in crime since childhood. However, by their 40s, Moke had started over clean while Jady was sent to prison. The latter twin ultimately gets a chance at a fresh start himself after making a deal with the corrupt Judge Farful (M. Emmet Walsh) to retrieve some emeralds their mom Cath (Glenn Close) dumped 30 years previous.

Jady gets Moke wrapped up in this final crime, but they can’t pull it off without their unapologetic deadbeat mom. With Judge Farful’s son (played inBrothersby Brendan Fraser) close on their tail, the family trio hit the road, infiltrate a country club, dig up a body, and retrieve the emeralds. However, when confronted by Farful, Cath makes a break for it. Jady, Moke, and Cath betray one another several more times after that, but a showdown with Farful in an abandoned mall brings out the best of them.Cath takes the fall and goes to prison, while her sons take the money—though it’s a bit more complicated than just that.

The Final Two Emeralds In Brothers' Ending Explained

How Jady Managed To Get Has Hands On The Last Emeralds

At the end ofBrothers, as the titular pair left their visit with Cath in prison, Jady unveiled two additional emeralds—useful since both he and Moke had given away their cut of the bag of cash Cath had left for them. These are the jewels that Cath had not sold following her betrayal earlier in the film, instead pocketing them for future use. A flashback reveals that she had quickly swallowed the emeralds (just like her partner had 30 years previous) before being arrested. This way, the police wouldn’t find the stones, and she could choose what to do with them later.

Josh Brolin & Peter Dinklage Had Way Too Much Fun Filming Their New Comedy Brothers

Brothers stars Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage discuss working with such an incredible cast, their go-to karaoke songs, and doing golf cart stunts.

Cath and Jady must have come to some agreement prior to their visit at the end ofBrothers. Cath asked to hold Blueberry shortly before the visit ended andpassed the baby to Jady a few moments later, subtly handing over the emeralds as well. However, Cath had swallowed three emeralds, while Jady only showed Moke two—one for each of them. The mystery of the third emerald was quickly solved, however. The final seconds ofBrothersultimately reveal that Dinklage’s narration throughout the film had been Jady telling an older Blueberry the whole exciting tale, and he divulges to his niece that he had secretly kept the third for himself.

Why Jady & Moke Both Gave Up Their Cut Of The Money

Jady & Moke Followed Cath’s Example

Glenn Close’s Cath had sold all but three emeralds inBrothers, so the bag of cash she, Jady, Moke, and Farful fought over in the abandoned mall would already have been worth several million dollars. After her arrest, Jady and Moke split the loot, but neither of them wound up having access to this cash by the end of the film.Moke had used his cut to pay Judge Farful for the guncovered in Jady’s prints, which the old man had been using as collateral to keep the parolee under control. This selfless act ensured that Jady wouldn’t be sent back to prison and could fully enjoy his new freedom.

This meant that if the Mungers ever hoped to see that money again, they had no choice but to name the baby Blueberry once she arrived.

To match his brother’s sacrifice, Jady also gave up his cut of the cash.He placed the money into a trust for Moke’s baby—a selfless but stupid move since Moke had planned to use his brother’s wealth when needed. To make matters worse, Jady listed the child’s name as Blueberry, believing that this was what Moke had planned to name his daughter. This meant that if the Mungers ever hoped to see that money again, they had no choice but to name the baby Blueberry once she arrived. Luckily, Cath handing over the last few emeralds meant that Jady and Moke got their hands on some wealth regardless.

Cath’s Sacrifice & Redemption Explained

Cath Wasn’t Great, But She Wasn’t All Bad

From the beginning ofBrothers,it was clear that Cath wasn’t a very good mom. She had led her boys into a life of crime, and once she stole those emeralds, everything went downhill. It was over 30 years before Jady and Moke ever saw their mother again, and Cath only got them to listen to her by claiming that she was sick with only limited time left. This was, of course, a lie. To make matters worse,Cath took off with the emeralds when Farful had her sons at gunpoint. It seemed she intended to take the jewels, get some cash, and escape the country while Jady and Moke rotted in prison.

The 30 Best Movies On Amazon Prime Right Now (April 2025)

In a vast landscape of streaming, Prime Video may very well have the best selection of movies around, and there are some great movies on the service.

However, something changed for Cath when she saw her sons fighting with one another during the mall brawl inBrothers. She saw the distrust between them, which inspired her to make a selfless decision for the first time in her life. Cath knew of an escape route, but rather than take it herself, she told her sons what to do, swallowed the final emeralds, and faced the police. Not only this but rather than holding on to those emeralds herself, Cath passed them over to Jady. She might have been a terrible mother, butthese decisions inBrothers' ending redeemed her in the end.

What Happened To Brendan Fraser’s Farful In Brothers' Ending

Farful’s Father Didn’t Care What Happened To Him

Brendan Fraser’s Farful was the primary villain ofBrothers, though he was little more than a lackey for his father, Judge Farful. He is desperate throughout the film to get Jady to follow through on his end of the deal and retrieve the emeralds for him, primarily so that his dad will recognize his effort and worth. Unfortunately for Farful, the last time he is seen inBrothers’ending,he is trapped under a burning Christmas tree following his brawl with Moke and Jady. While it’s implied that he would be okay, Farful’s relationship with his father surely wouldn’t be improved by such an astounding failure.

He told the older Farful that he didn’t have much time left, a sentiment repeated throughout the film regarding Moke’s relationship with Cath.

We don’t see exactly what happens to Farful, but Moke’s meeting with the man’s father provides some additional hints. After giving Judge Farful his bag of cash, Moke asked what had come of the corrections officer. The judge didn’t know or care, but the relationship between father and son inspired Moke to give one final warning. He told the older Farful that he didn’t have much time left, a sentiment repeated throughout the film regarding Moke’s relationship with Cath. It’s unclear inBrothers' ending whether the judge would take this advice, but it can be hoped that another conflicted parent-child relationship would be healed.

Marisa Tomei’s Brothers Cameo Explained

Tomei’s Bethesda Served An Important Purpose

One of the strangest moments inBrotherscame from Marisa Tomei’s cameo. The actor played a spiritual, aura-reading character named Bethesda, who had been corresponding with Jady while he was in prison. Jady wanted to stop by Bethesda’s house for a romantic rendezvous (which resulted in Moke’s own unexpected romantic rendezvous with an orangutan named Samuel), butit’s ultimately revealed that there was an ulterior motive here. Jady had been writing back and forth with Bethesda becauseshe was employed by the country club where Cath had buried Glenn decades earlier.

Ultimately,Brothersrevealed that everything Jady and Cath did was for a reason—even Tomei’s romantic prison pen pal. They had been planning the operation for months, and poor Moke simply ended up along for the ride (after Jady secretly got him fired from his job). Though pretty despicable, it all turned out okay for the Mungers in the end. Cath might have ended up in prison, and Moke was forced to name his daughter Blueberry, but they all became filthy rich—so it was worth it.
