Avowedoffers players an expansive RPG adventure unlike any other, packed full of interesting characters to meet, side quests to complete, and a chosen one main story full of twists and turns. Of course, fans of thePillars of Eternityseries may want to take their time and immerse themselves in each piece of lore. However, for those who are keen to rush through the main story, it is important to know whether one can continue playing once the credits have rolled.

Considering there’s so much to do inAvowed’ssprawling maps, one would hope that, like many other RPGs of its ilk, players could simply continue from where they left off after they’ve beaten the game. This is fairly typical in modern games, although it is a relatively recent trend, as older RPGs would often end the game completely after the main story had been wrapped up. Surprisingly, when it comes to continuingAvowedafter finishing the story, unlike other RPGs, it is a little more complicated.

Players Can’t Keep Playing Avowed After Beating The Main Story

The Game Ends After The Credits

Once players have beatenAvowed’sfinal quest, they’ll be treated to the traditional Obsidian wrap-up where they’re shown theconsequences of their choices. The credits then roll before the player is dropped back to the main menu. There’s no way to return to Eora or continue after the final moments ofAvowed’sstoryonce players have been sent back to the main menu. Any unresolved side quests or missed loot will remain unfinished, which is a shame for those who still want to wrap everything up.

Avowed Is Fixing RPGs By Changing One Important Feature

Avowed has the potential to be the best RPG of 2025, if not one of the best RPGs of all time, thanks to it fixing the genre’s biggest problem.

ConsideringeverythingAvowedhas to offer, players will undoubtedly want to see those side quests to completion. So,it is definitely advisable to finish anything that fans are excited to do before reaching the end ofAvowed. Of course, that’s a lot to ask of a player, especially those who perhaps want to come back toAvowedafter playing something else, or are keen to wrap up the main story to avoid ruining its pacing. Fortunately, there is an easier solution that will help players.

There’s A Way To Keep Playing After Finishing Avowed

Once players reach the Garden - one ofAvowed’sfinal areas - they’ll be told via a pop-up that they’ve reached the point of no return. After players go beyond this point of no return, they’re unable to revisit past locations or complete any unfinished quests. So,it is here that they should create a separate save, so that, once they’ve finished the game, they can return and complete anything left. It is worth noting that this point of no return comes quite a long time before the final boss of the game, so players shouldn’t worry that they’ve saved too early.

Unfortunately, this is the only way players can return toAvowedonce the credits have rolled, but it’ll only take a few seconds to load back in. However, consideringAvowed’simpressive level of freedomthat allows fans to approach their optional objectives and exploration however they’d like, it’s worth doing. It is undeniably frustrating that players can’t simply continue playing after the game ends, but this is Obsidian Entertainment’s typical modus operandi.

Avowed Is Like Other Obsidian RPGs

The Outer Worlds And New Vegas Are The Same

Obsidian Entertainment’s other RPGs end the same way asAvowed, at least in terms of structure. After finishing the final mission inThe Outer WorldsandFallout: New Vegas, players get to see the results of their choices and are then shown the credits. Once they’ve gotten through all of that, they’re sent back to the main menu and are forced to load an old save. While unconventional by modern standards, it allows Obsidian to end its stories definitively and dramatically if it wants to, which can be novel.

Pillars of Eternity and its sequel, Deadfire - both of which share the same universe as Avowed - also feature a similar structure when it comes to their endings. However, much like Avowed and The Outer Worlds, they have a point of no return which clearly indicates when the game is about to wrap up and players won’t be able to complete any side content.

Players being unable to continueAvowedafter beating it isn’t the end of the world, especially as the game gives them plenty of warning when they’ve reached the point of no return. Nevertheless,Avowedhas a lot for players to do, so it’s important to keep in mind before reaching that point, especially for those who would rather complete every side quest and optional activity before they see the end credits.
