Jai Courtney details his conversation with James Gunn about Captain Boomerang’sDCEUdeath inThe Suicide Squad. One of the last movies that came out ofthe DCEU movie timelinebefore its conclusion in 2023 wasThe Suicide Squad, which served as a semi-sequel to 2016’sSuicide Squad. WhileThe Suicide Squadfeatured mostly new characters, it also included a handful of those from the 2016 movie, including Digger Harkness, a.k.a. Captain Boomerang. In the movie’s opening, Captain Boomerang dies along with a handful of other characters as part of a decoy team, while the actual team carries out the mission.

In a new interview withScreen Rant, while promoting his filmCatching Dust, Courtney opened up about his death early on inThe Suicide Squad. The Australian star revealed the conversation he and Gunn had, while looking at the possibility of returning for the new DC Universe, sharing the following:

Margot Robbie Harley Quinn

I don’t have talks with James. [Playing a new character is] a nice idea, but no, we’re cool. We haven’t caught up for some time. But, yeah, look, man, I would love to see that character get on screen again, and if I’m the guy to play it, then that’d be even better.I remember having a conversation with him before we shot that installment, and kind of feeling like it was such a bummer that he was killing him off, because I felt like it derailed any chance of any lateral movement within that world. And he was the one that was like, “You know that’s not true. Anything could happen, these things jump time, they go back and forth, and things.”

It sort of, actually, helped me chill out a little, because there was obviously an emotional attachment to that part, and I still feel like there’s unfinished business. So, who knows? If things continue to accelerate for me, and there’s a time where the right people want to get involved, and we can create something more with that character, then I would obviously love to. It was so much fun to play him, and take him into a space that wasn’t necessarily bound to what we came to know, or if people did get to know him from the comics, it sort of was a role that jumped all over the place and had different iterations over the years. So, I don’t see why there’s any reason we can’t continue to have that conversation. It’s just about the right people wanting to do it at the right time, and yeah, I certainly wouldn’t be closed off to it.

How Jai Courtney Could Return As Captain Boomerang Or Another Character In The DCU

The DCU Is A Soft Reboot Of The DCEU And Will Carry Over Some Actors And Characters

Since Gunn and Peter Safran came on board to run DC Studios, they have made it clear that the upcomingDC Universe franchisewill mostly be a reboot, with key characters, like Superman, being recast. However, that’s not stopping the DC Universe from using some aspects of the DCEU franchise, asDC Studios is bringing back a handful of actors to reprise their roles, like Viola Davis' Amanda Waller. Courtney’s Captain Boomerang could be one of them, but without having to mess with his death inThe Suicide Squad.

Peacemakerseason 2is the perfect example of how various elements of the DCEU are still factoring into Gunn’s DC Universe. While many of the characters fromPeacemakerseason 1 are coming back, Gunn is also suggesting that not everything from the first season will be canon when the show returns for season 2. That is how they could have Courtney play a new version of Captain Boomerang, where he never died in the DC Universe continuity.

What’s Going On With Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn?

Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is not yet confirmed to be joining James Gunn’s DCU. Will she survive the imminent soft reboot?

However, if they end up recasting Captain Boomerang in Gunn’s DC Universe, Courtney could always play a new character. It wouldn’t be the first time a DCEU actor that Gunn has already worked with gets cast in a new role, as Nathan Fillion will now beplaying Guy Gardner, a.k.a. Green Lantern, in 2025’sSuperman, following his small role inThe Suicide Squadas Cory Pitzner, a.k.a. TDK. But for now, the DC audience can relive Courtney’s Captain Boomerang in bothSuicide SquadandThe Suicide Squad.
