But Brown ’s late dive into Star Wars want to add that approach to its next propagation .
release later this calendar month from Chronicle Books , Rey and Pals check the first time that Brown ’s Eisner Award - make headway Star Wars cartooning breaks out of the original trilogy of movies ( and a abbreviated sidestep into the prequel earned run average for theJedi Academy kid Bible ) and into the worlds and prison term flow of the subsequence movies , The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi . amass a veranda of new graphics from Brown , Rey and Pals take after along as Rey and her friends — Rose , Finn , Poe , BB-8 , the porgs , and yes , even an angry footling boy named Ben , and a few of his nefarious mates from the First Order — sight with the biggest threats the kidskin of Star Wars can face .
… Mainly playtime - base ones . What , you thought these kiddie versions of our Hero would be out oppose a galactic civic state of war ? Absolutely not ! We recently got to speak to Brown about his process take his cartoony aesthetic to the era of the Star Wars sequels , about writing for character whose arcs we wo n’t fully realize until The Rise of Skywalker hits theaterslater this year , and perhaps the most significant disputation of our time : BB-8 or porgs ? learn out the interview below , as well as a look at some of the art from the book , make its debut here on io9 !

io9 : Why was now the right metre for you to tackle the sequel epoch in this personal line of credit of Holy Scripture ?

Honestly the most adorable little book cover I’ve seen in ages.Image: Jeffrey Brown (Chronicle Books)
Jeffrey Brown : I had a good break from make up Star Wars books , go to catch the fresh movie as a fan . But drawing Star Wars is always fun , I was start to get ideas , and after wrap up my middle grade Lucy & Andy Neanderthal series , a unexampled Star Wars Word was the perfect palate cleanser before starting my next series .
io9 : Of the sequel characters , who were you most excited to get to “ wreak with ” ? Was there an unexpected favorite you developed over the course of make the book and design the character ?
Brown : I ’ve love watching more and more kids dress up as Rey at conventions , and had been get requests to draw her , so she was certainly at the top of the leaning , along with BB-8 . Finn , Rose , and Hux were also fun . But I really wish well there had been more space for the fathier caretaker kids — I experience like there could be a whole book about them .

Never underestimate the Holdo maneuver.Image: Jeffrey Brown (Chronicle Books)
io9 : On your anterior Star Wars book , you were working with characters and iconography so established that , even simplify , they ’re now recognisable . Were there any particular roadblocks desegregate the characters and worlds of the sequel picture into your style for this new account book ?
Brown : The gravid hurdle was figuring out how to quarter Leia , Han , and Luke . Luke was probably the easygoing , because beards make everything easier , but it was hard to regain the right balance to make those three expect one-time , but not too former , and still have the sort of warmth and cuteness they had in the Vader books . Some of the costuming took a bit of figuring out as well — Kylo ’s helmet has quite a bite of detail , so simplifying that was another bit that take on extra oeuvre . Another aspect of Kylo was his scar , which appear in all of my thought sketches with helmet - less Kylo , but did n’t feel correct for the full colour drawings both in look and flavor .
io9 : What was the outgrowth in the early stages of figuring out scenario for Rey and Pals care , given that it ’s now the latest in a logical argument of books you ’ve done ? Do you have any playfulness anecdote from that other mental process ?

It does suit him, after all.Image: Jeffrey Brown (Chronicle Books)
Brown : Like the previous Vader books , the first stone’s throw in the cognitive process was to come up with a ton of thought . I found a fortune of my initial ideas leaned more toward gags that did n’t have the kind of warmth or charm that I manage to capture in the first books , and it took some time to get back to those feelings . It ’s strange , but every prison term I ’ve done one of these books , I do about a dozen initial conception to give Lucasfilm an estimation of what the overall feel of the book will be , and every time all but one or two of those ideas make it into the book .
io9 : While Vader and Son and Little Princess focused on parent - child relationship , here you ’re dole out more a chemical group of characters that are more friends ( and occasionally foes , in Kylo ’s case ) . How did that active change the tone of the scenarios you need to search for Rey and Pals ?
Brown : With the first two books , even when other fibre add up into shimmer , they ’re still interact within the CRO of parenting , and that give each situation a kind of baseline . With Rey and Pals it was all more up in the melodic phrase , with lots of dissimilar relationship . In the ending , I focused on the feeling of family through friendly relationship , which is something that Rey , Finn , Rose , and Poe all variety of plowshare in the new movies .

BB stands for “Bowling Buddy” here.Image: Jeffrey Brown (Chronicle Books)
io9 : On a scale of 1 - 10 , how severely was it not to just put porgs in every representative ?
Brown : I would say 5 . I had a really good joke with Chewbacca use up porgs that did n’t make the cutting , no matter how hard I tried to press for it to be admit .
io9 : And on that note , of the cunning additions to Star Wars in the subsequence geological era , who was the most fun to deal with , the porgs or BB-8 ?

Scavenger rules totally apply to lightsabers too.Image: Jeffrey Brown (Chronicle Books)
Brown : I really wish how much astuteness there is to BB-8 ’s fictional character — the porgs are cute and fun , but do n’t have as much personality to work with . There ’s also something really satisfying about coloring in BB-8 ’s orange bands .
io9 : In the original trilogy - era volume , you ’re deal with kinship that , while malleable in the context of these book , are clearly known and established to Star Wars fans — we cognize Luke and Vader ’s journey together , we know Luke and Leia ’s relationship with each other . Rey and her Friend ’ stories are still more nebulous to the audience , so was the potential to search those relationships more freeing to you as a narrator because of that , or a new challenge ?
Brown : It was definitely a challenge . I had to keep to what was in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi without closing off hypothesis , so I was n’t able to search as much ; with the OT characters there ’s so much more material beyond the movies to draw on , and I could use what citizenry were intimate with to throw thing up unexpectedly . Rey and Kylo are still having their stories shaped and build up up , and it ’s going to be another 40 years before they have roots and branches as expansive at the characters from A New Hope .

io9 : talk of which , given the obscure when it comes to these reference , what was the cognitive process work with Lucasfilm like this time around ? Were any estimation for the book nixed because they might ’ve contrast with reveals we could expect down the line ?
Brown : I thought perchance some jocularity were turn down because , but I do n’t live , it ’s all poker face there ! There were some jokes that were rejected and I recover myself wondering : Was it because it hints at something in the new film , or because it went the opposite direction of where the new motion-picture show direct ? But then I was ask [ Lucasfilm ’s ] Leland Chee about that possible action , and he say it was really all about the jest and how everyone felt about them . I do n’t mind , I like going see the young picture not have sex anything and being surprised .
io9 : You ’ve tackle the originals , now you ’ve tackled the sequels … you ’ve also done the Jedi Academy serial publication , but is there any chance we might see an Ahsoka and Pals in your future ?

Brown : I have to admit I ’m still behind on watching Rebels , though I enjoyed Clone Wars and what I ’ve watched of Rebels . So I ’m not certain I ’m ready to tackle Ahsoka yet , but I really loved both Rogue One and Solo … maybe there ’s some young Lando narration to be told . Or if I can reckon out how to keep a book about Jyn and K-2SO from being too dark . And , of trend , I ’ve only pull in a handful of pages dealing with the prequels , which leave a long ton of possibilities that does n’t even include what Star Wars films and shows are still to come .
Rey and Pals hits shelves on August 20 .
