Warning: Spoilers for Power Girl #13Supermanand his Super-Family are the epitome of the brightest light and the ultimate symbol of hope in the DC Universe. They don’t ever cross the line, and they don’t need a no-kill rule, unlike some other heroes. But a new dark hero has debuted, and her power, though innocent enough, is being used in a novel way so shocking that even Superman might have to excommunicate the new “superhero"Ejectafrom Metropolis.

Superman has a wide range of villainshe’s had to face, but they might be nothing compared to this new, and supposedly heroic, threat. InPower Girl#13by Leah Williams, Adriana Melo, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Becca Carey, Power Girl’s best friend - Omen, the telepath and former Teen Titan Lillith Clay - is attending a party with fellow superhero Natasha “Steel” Irons when she’s threatened by a sudden force freshly debuting in DC Comics.

Comic book panels: Ejecta poses before fighting Omen at a party.

Her name is Ejecta, and she claims to have the power to see into the future. What she’s seen of Omen’s future is so bad that she’s elected to kill Omen before that future ever comes true, in a dark twist on a well-known superpower.

Enter Ejecta: DC’s Newest Dark Hero

With Alleged Precognitive Powers, Ejecta Cleans Up Metropolis Before It Gets Dirty

Ejecta claims to have the power of precognition, which means that she can see into the future. She’s not the only hero with this ability, considering there’sone powerful magic user, Mordred, who saw his future self turn to evil and tried to go back in time to save himself from destruction. She appears in a knight’s shining armor, yet instead of coming to save Omen, she’s come to kill her. She’s seen the future, and like a sort of time traveler, she’s trying to stop the dark future from happening.

Superman Confirms There’s 1 DC Villain Who Can Beat Him INSTANTLY (& It’s Not Darkseid)

Everybody knows about Kryptonite - but in a magic war, Superman’s weakness to magic makes him a liability. And gets him knocked out immediately.

LikeSuperman, this Omen apparently has some powerful abilities not yet unlocked. Omen’s powers of telepathy are reported, according to Ejecta’s precognition, to grow so strong that she will threaten the very fabric of the world. Ejecta even shows Omen the future by allowing her mind to be read, showing Omen her very fate, and exactly why Ejecta must kill her. And yet, the future aside,Ejecta feels like the villain here, because Omen has done no wrong - yet.

Is Ejecta a Hero or a Villain?

Ejects Claims There Is Evil in Omen’s Future

Ejecta isn’t just a dark anti-hero like Lobo or Marvel’s Punisher, but her first appearance and seeming motivations make herthe most morally gray character in current comics. On paper, she is a hero protecting the entire world, and in a utilitarian sense, she is protecting the good of the many by sacrificing only one - the life of Omen. It’s the old thought experiment of a time traveler going back in time to kill Hitler before he ever did any wrong. The question then becomes whether a human being is culpable for sins they have not yet committed.

For another complex precognitive superhero, check out Dreamer’s DC adventures, especially after she’s become a major player in theAbsolute Powerevent by Mark Waid and Dan Mora. For more about Dreamer’s origins - and her powers - readBad Dream: A Dreamer Storyby Nicole Maines and Rye Hickman, an original graphic novel available now from DC Comics.

Comic book panels: Omen stands up, dejected after losing a fight with Ejecta.

In Omen’s case, Ejecta has promised to return to finish the job. This quick battle is a taste of what is to come, just like Ejecta’s supposed precognition as well as Omen’s superhero name. As Power Girl protects her best friend Omen in the issues to come, it’s impossible to tell whether Omen will soon unlock her supposedly disturbing powers. In any case, good or bad,Ejectawill deliver justice in her new and twisted way - oneSupermanwould never approve of.

Power Girl#13is available now from DC Comics.
