A star from one of the lastDCEUmovies,Blue Beetle, revealed in an exclusive interview atNYCCthat they inadvertently created their very own multiverse with an improvised line.Blue Beetlewas released on August 18, 2025, and became one of theDCEU’s highest-rated movies. Unfortunately, it was also thelowest-grossing DCEU movie ever, released at a time when the cinematic universe’s fate had already been sealed and the DCEU’s constituent movies suddenly felt somewhat obsolete. Nevertheless, DC Studios boss, James Gunn, confirmed thatBlue Beetle’s Jamie Reyes (portrayed by Xolo Maridueña) willcontinue to exist in the DCU.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant,Blue Beetleco-star Harvey Guillén revealed he also helped immortalize Dr. Sanchez byoffhandedly creating a multiverse in which he is related to another of Guillén’s characters,What We Do In The Shadows' Guillermo de la Cruz. Guillén revealed that when “Sanchez” revealed his true name, José Francisco Morales Rivera de la Cruz, to Victoria Kord, he improvised the surname to match that of Guillermo’s. As Ángel Manuel Soto is aShadowsfan, he and Warner Bros were happy to keep it in, which Guillén has head-canonized to mean they are related.

Blue Beetle Cast Guide

Harvey Guillén: You know, Dr. de la Cruz was not in the script. I threw that in as a joke, because Ángel Manuel Soto, the director, is a fan of Shadows. And I said my full name, because, “My name is not Sanchez, pen—a, it’s Jose Morales” and I said the full Mexican name, which is, like, 20 names. At the end, I added “de la Cruz” as a joke, and I didn’t think it was gonna make it. But he was like, “Hey, Warner Bros. says it’s okay.” They never stopped it, they never flagged it, so now, I made a multiverse where the doctor is related to Guillermo. And, I’ve also created other characters, other places where I can throw myself in a little bit. And if I can, I want to create a world where Guillermo, is connected to several characters around the multiverse. [Laughs]

What Harvey Guillén’s Blue Beetle Comments Mean For The Movie

José Francisco Morales Rivera de la Cruz Is Now Deceased

Guillén’s “Dr. Sanchez” was initially employed byBlue Beetle’s arch-villain, Victoria Kord, before he took a heroic turn and renounced his loyalty to aid Jamie Reyes. His betrayal would lead to his death at the hands of OMAC, drawing a line beneath de la Cruz’s fleetingBlue Beetlestory. Given this and the fact that Gunn has only confirmed Maridueña’s Reyes to be moving over to the DCU,it remains highly unlikely that de la Cruz will be seen or heard of again.

Blue Beetle Cast Guide: Every New DC Character

The DC movie Blue Beetle introduces a charismatic cast of characters to the DC Universe, including Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña, among others.

This is compounded by the fact that de la Cruz is an original character, meaning there is no particular onus on Gunn to move him over to the DCU with Reyes. Guillén’s comments at NYCC, meanwhile, show that the studio wasn’t particularly protective over the character and his true name, suggesting that de la Cruz’s death atthe end ofBlue Beetleremains canon. This ultimately means thatGuillén’s creation of a “multiverse” in which the likes of Guillermo and José are related remains possible without an express retconfrom Warner Bros. or DC.

Our Take On Harvey Guillén’s Secret DC Multiverse Setup

Anything Is Possible In The Multiverse

Whether Guillén’s “multiverse” means that José de la Cruz and Guillermo de la Cruz are the same character in different realities, or simply related to one another in the same or alternate universes is unclear. It’s highly unlikely that Warner Bros. approved of the change thinking that their DCEU was taking place in the same universe asWhat We Do in the Shadows, however. On the other hand, vampires do exist in DC Comics and play a minor role, so it is still possible that this is the case.

Ultimately, however, Guillén’s new “multiverse” can be whatever he wants it to be.

Ultimately, however, Guillén’s new “multiverse” can be whatever he wants it to be.The nature of the multiverse in most fiction is that it contains an infinite number of possibilities, and Guillén’s concept of having de la Cruz variants existing in some of them is logically feasible. The fact thatBlue Beetleis now immortalized as a story in what will presumably be an alternate universe to the DCU’s main continuity, meanwhile, means that this particular de la Cruz has been immortalized along with it.
