Love Me Dead Key Art Dove Cameron

Dove Cameron has come a long way since herLiv and Maddiedays, butLove Me Deadstill marks an exciting chapter in the actor and musician’s career. Cameron has been acting since the age of eight, and has consistently taken on more daring and adventurous roles. The actor has jumped from genre to genre with different projects, spending time on theDescendantsfranchiseas Mal, and taking on a villainous role inMarvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., butLove Me Deadis her first psychological thriller.

The more adult nature ofLove Me Deadalso is, in some ways, more in line with Cameron’s musical career. While Cameron was a standout performer inHairspray Live!and the Apple TV+ series-turned-stage musicalSchmigadoon!(check out thisSchmigadoon!season 2 interviewwith Cameron for more about her work on the show), even that material didn’t match the tone of songs like “Boyfriend” from the actor and singer’s musical catalogue. Cameron is not likely to sing much inLove Me Dead, but her performance will be gripping and mature, according to director Josh Webber:

Josh Webber: Dove Cameron delivers a captivating and unexpected performance inLOVE ME DEAD—unlike anything she’s done before. Her fans are going to love seeing her in this new light as a fearless, enigmatic femme fatale, highlighting her evolution as an actress who is willing to take risks. Working with Dove and RJ Mitte was an incredible experience, and their on-screen chemistry is absolutely electric; I can’t wait for audiences to see it on the big screen.

The reveal ofLove Me Dead’s key art also coincidentally came shortly after the trailer for thecanceledPowerpuff Girlslive-action serieswas leaked. Cameron was set to play Bubbles in that show alongside Chloe Bennett and Yana Perrault. Although some negative responses to the leaked trailer have caused some to praise the fact the series was scrapped, it certainly would have been a big release for Cameron. The timing of the leak was fortunate in one sense: even as it brought attention to an unrealized moment from Cameron’s past,Love Me Deadmarks an exciting step for her future.

Love Me Deadwill be released in movie theaters on August 8.
