Warning: Spoilers for Dragon Ball Daima, episode #14 aheadDragon Ball Daimahas been chock-full of references to the past ofDragon Ball, and this time it’s honoring one of the most beloved groups of goofy villains, the Ginyu Force.Daima’s new successors to the Ginyu Force are Gomah’s top soldiers, meaning they’ll soon be a problem for Goku and friends.

The Ginyu Force was a group of five villains of varying appearances who served under Frieza and had a major presence through much of the Namek arc. Led by Captain Ginyu himself, the Ginyu Force were known for the ridiculous, Super Sentai style posesthat they would strike, and it was very important to them to get the poses right. Despite being fairly goofy in their presentation, the Ginyu Force represented a serious threat, with its members doing major damage to Gohan, breaking his neck. All members of the Ginyu Force were ultimately killed by Vegeta, except Ginyu, who was trapped in the body of a frog for decades.

The Gendarmerie Force run into Kuu and Duu at the store.

The Ginyu Force’s Ridiculous Attitude Lives On

In episode #14 ofDaima, fans are introduced to the Gendarmerie Force, a group of five elite soldiers serving under Gomah who are distinguished from other Gendarmerie soldiers by a vertical red line on their faces. They introduced themselves with a lengthy display, referring to themselves with a number designation and striking a special pose each, which they came together to do at the end. While not exactly the same, their group pose is highly reminiscent ofthe group pose used by the Ginyu Force. For long-timeDragon Ballfans, the reference is an obvious one.

The Gendarmerie Force, consisting of Captain Kadem, Danima, Hillia, Mashim, and Gaimoi, all wield large and powerful weapons, which does set them apart from the Ginyu Force. Each member is also color-coded in their introduction, using traditional Super Sentai colors red, green, blue, yellow, and pink. Like the Ginyu Force, they take pride in their strength, although they were shaken at the thought of an opponent who had defeated a Tamagami. The group seems very easygoing, spending much of their screen time eating and buying snacks.

Will The Gendarmerie Force Be a Threat to Goku?

The Gendarmerie Force May Be Stronger Than the Ginyu Force

Of course,as soldiers working for Gomah, they’ll inevitably be brought into conflict with Goku and his team, who’ve already made contact with the Gendarmerie. The question is, will they actually be able to slow down Goku’s group at all? It’s hard to imagine these five actually defeating Goku, or anyone else in the group for that matter. On the other hand, if the Gendarmerie Force is so high-ranking, they must be fairly strong, and even if they’re only average enemies now, they’d still be a far sight stronger than the Ginyu Force.

Overall, the Gendarmerie Force looks like they’ll at least be serving as some comic relief, and their kindness to Kuu and Duu shows that they may not be all bad. If they aren’t overly loyal to Gomah, they may well end up surviving all this to serve under the next Demon King. Either way,Dragon Ball Daimajust got a lot sillier, and maybe that’s for the best.
