Warning: Contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Daima episode #8.Dragon Ballis no stranger to retconning its story, andDragon Ball Daimais no exception. Between things like revealing Namekians to be demons, rewriting what little was known about the lore of the Supreme Kais, and potentially introducing another change to how the Potara earrings work with Kibito Kai,Daimais making plenty of big changes to the established lore, and it’s unlikely to stop, anytime soon.

If there’s anyone who’s been impacted the most byDragon Ball Daima’s retcons, it’s undoubtedly Majin Buu. WithDaima’s story centered around the Demon Realm, that’s brought attention to Majin Buu’s history, as he’s one of several characters from the Majin Buu saga who have been associated with the Demon Realm in one way or another. As a result,Dragon Ball Daimahas officially retconned Majin Buu’s origin with its latest episode, but whether that should be expected to impact theDragon Ballfranchise is another story, entirely.

Dragon Ball Daima Reveals The True Origin Of Majin Buu

Majin Buu’s New Origin In Dragon Ball Explained

Majin Buu’s origin was fairly simple in theDragon Ball; he was a monster created by the evil wizard Bibidi, and after Bibidi was killed by Shin, Bibidi’s son, Babidi, made it his mission to free Majin Buu from his prison and use him to take over the universe, something he ultimately failed at when Majin Buu betrayed and killed him. That’s no longer the case, though, as according toDragon Ball Daimaepisode #8,Majin Buu was created by the witch Marba, with Bibidi commissioning Marba for her work because he could not create something like Majin Buu, himself.

This isn’t the first timeDragon Ballhas retconned Majin Buu’s origins, however. In an interview with Akira Toriyama in 2014, Toriyama said that Bibidi didn’t create Majin Buu, with Majin Buu being something that had existed since time immemorial that Bibidi just found one day.Daima’s take on things is notably different from that retcon, but since it has Bibidi involved in Majin Buu’s creation,Dragon Ball Daima’s latest retcon can be seen as a combination of the two differing takes on Majin Buu’s origin, with Bibidi no longer creating Majin Buu, but still being responsible for his existence.

Why Dragon Ball Daima’s Majin Buu Retcon Isn’t A Problem For Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball Daimaonce again retconning Majin Buu’s origins is a big deal, and reactions to it have been notably mixed. Majin Buu’s original origin worked largely because of how simple an origin it was, so to some people,Dragon Ball Daima’s recent retcon to Majin Buu’s origin only serves to complicate what was supposed to be a straightforward part of the lore, in addition to diminishing how much of a threat Bibidi was supposed to be. That’s a common complaint people have about retcons to established backstories, and it’s unfortunately easy to see that in play withDragon Ball.

That being said, the retcon is nowhere near the problem some people have made it out to be. Not only was Majin Buu’s original origin already retconned a decade ago, butDragon Ballhas always used retcons to serve whatever new story beat Akira Toriyama wanted to push, with even Goku’s identity as a Saiyan, one of the most iconic parts ofDragon Ball, being a retcon to the series lore, as well. Retcons certainly aren’t always good, but overall, criticizing the new lore surrounding Majin Buu is faulty when it’s merelyDragon Ball’s latest attempt at retconning its story.

More than that, of course, is how much the retcon adds to the story. While the simplicity of Majin Buu’s original origin inDragon Ball Zwas good, the new version does a lot to flesh out the lore in an interesting way, especially with howMajin Buu’s relationship with the Supreme Kaiswas made far bigger to the point of completely revitalizing Majin Buu’s place inDragon Ball’s lore.Dragon Ball Daima’s Majin Buu retcon only works to improve Majin Buu andDragon Ball, as a whole, and overall, that’s great to see.

Will Dragon Ball Daima Continue To Change Majin Buu’s Lore?

Nearly every episode ofDragon Ball Daimahas done something to retcon or recontextualize something aboutDragon Ball’s lore, and with Majin Buu set to be a major plot device inDragon Ball Daima’s story due toArinsu’s plans to create her own Majin Buu,Dragon Ball Daimawill likely continue making retcons to Majin Buu’s lore as its story continues to progress. With how good the current lore is, of course, that’s something to look forward to, so there’s plenty of reason to be excited about whatever else might be in store for Majin Buu inDragon Ball Daima.
