The moment Majin Buu killedDaburainDragon Ball Zwas incredible at the time, because it further cemented Buu’s status as an epic boss, who now felt even more impossible to beat. However, the implications of Dabura’s death for the entireDragon Ballfranchise had grown sour over the years untilDragon Ball Daimafinally addressed why he died as easily as he did. While the answer is genius and helps justifyDaimaeven more than before, there are some who undoubtedly feel that this revelation came much too late.
Even though Dabura’s death inDBZwas still impressive at the time, how the franchise treated him felt completely random. Dabura’s presence essentially introduced a whole new realm of existence that Goku and company would have to contend with some day. The fact that Dabura also appeared at a random moment when he wasn’t even the true boss helped create the impression thatDragon Ball’s universe was much bigger than just the next alien threat. But then Majin Buu made short work of him.

Dabura Was Weak Against Buu Because He Didn’t Have the Evil Third Eye
This greatly minimized Daburaand, by extension, the entirety of the Demon Realm. The fact that Dabura was the king made fans come to the natural conclusion that he was likelythe most powerful of his kind, and by being killed so effortlessly, it created the impression that the entire demon race was weak and not really worth anyone’s time. ButDragon Ball Daimahas justified why Dabura lost so easily against Majin Buu: he didn’t have the Evil Third Eye, an artifact used by the Supreme Demon Kings to gain incredible magic powers.
As revealed inDaimaepisode #15, the Evil Third Eye bestows the one who wears it on their forehead with immeasurable power. Dabura’s father, King Abura, originally owned the eye as ruler of the Demon Realm, but when Dabura usurped his father from the throne, he lost the Evil Third Eye in the process. Even though he was now the king,Dabura was never truly as strong as the kings had been before him, since he was the first who didn’t have the Evil Third Eye in his possession, and thus, failed to achieve his true power as king.

Fans can therefore safely conclude from these revelations inDragon Ball Daimaepisode #15 that Majin Buu was able to easily defeat Dabura because the demon king couldn’t tap into his lineage’s true power.
Dragon Ball Daima Should Have Dropped This Bit of Lore Immediately
Even though Dabura’s weakness has been mostly justified, it comes much too late for some fans. Although part of the fandom always hoped thatDragon Ballwould someday venture into Dabura’s kingdom, their anticipation was likely stunted by the fact that demons were considered to be very weak. Dabura couldn’t even stand up to Majin Buu’s first form. So, when Goku ventured into the Demon Realm, fans felt there would be no real threat.
If Dabura had been the king and was so incredibly weak, then it was highly unlikely that other demons would pose much of a threat to the Z Warriors. So, while the reveal of an Evil Third Eye has helped make Dabura look less pathetic in hindsight, it would have been much better for the sake of fan anticipation ifDragon Ball Daimahad made Dabura seem less weak from the start. The easiest way would have been not totease about the Evil Third Eyeand just reveal it immediately.
This dynamic is very similar to how episode #15 suddenly made guns harmful to Goku and the gang, when fans were led to believe for 14 episodes that they were useless, just like every other firearm. At least, now viewers can be a little more excited about the dangers that await Goku’s party. Not only do they have to contend withMajin Duu, but Arinsu has now obtained the Evil Third Eye, which will just make matters much worse for Goku and the gang, since the true extent of its powers is still completely unknown in the world ofDragon Ball.
