The Seven Deadly Sins are integral to the world built byHazbin HotelandHelluva Boss. The concept of these sins as mortal failings originated from the writings of Christian monk Evagrius Ponticus in the 4th century. All of them are personified inHazbin HotelandHelluva Boss, which feature them as actualcharacters inHazbin Hotelcast.

Other historical demons (Lilith, Succubi, and Alastor) are notably depicted alongside them. The influences of the three major Abrahamic religions (that is, Judaism, Christianity and Islam) on the series naturally inform how each of the Seven Deadly Sins is portrayed in the shows and the roles they play in the stories.

7Lucifer Morningstar

The Demon of Pride

Lucifer Morningstar plays theHazbin Hotelruler of Hell, a fallen angel who now leads the Seven Deadly Sins.Lucifer represents the first of the seven, the sin of pride. The history of Lucifer’s origins dates back to at least 1st century Roman mythology, in which the Morningstar was a personification of the planet Venus and symbolized the breaking of dawn. It has been speculated that the planet’s orbital patterns may have created the inspiration behind the “fallen angel” mythos, and was then retold in Biblical scripture.

Hazbin Hotel Seasons 3 & 4 Confirmed As Season 2 Wait Continues

At SDCC, creator Vivienne Medrano confirms that Prime Video’s Hazbin Hotel has been renewed for seasons 3 and 4 despite the wait for season 2.

In more modern interpretations, the name Lucifer gradually became synonymous with Satan.Whether Satan or Lucifer is the true ruler of Hellhas been a matter of theological debate for many centuries, and with the release of the recentHelluva Bossepisode “Mastermind,” this debate now extends to the Vivziepop universe. TheLucifer character designinHazbin Hotelbears many tongue-in-cheek references to Christianity. The apple and golden serpent on the brim of his tophat, his forked tongue and slit-shaped pupils all serve asa nod to elements from Christianity’s Genesis story.

6Mammon

The Demon of Greed

As far back as the Middle Ages,Mammon was regarded as a deity representing the sin of greed. He is referenced numerous times in various Abrahamic texts, although it is unclear whether the word “mammon” is being used as an allegory for greed or if it is a proper noun used in reference to an entity. The most notable reference occurs in Matthew 6:24: “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”

InHelluva Boss, Mammon is portrayed as a portly, arrogant jester who spends every waking moment either eating or devising ways to make more money. Throughout Fizzarolli’s talent show performance, Mammon can be seen stuffing his face with popcorn, spewing crumbs as he talks with his mouth full. Later in the show, during Blitzø’s trial, Mammon lifts his stomach in both hands and rests it on top of the juror’s bench before leaning back to get comfortable for the testimony. Fittingly, Mammon’s jester cap and cane both feature dollar sign symbols, indicating his primary motivation.

5Asmodeus

The Demon of Lust

Asmodeus has a complex lore; although he personifiesthe sin of lustinHelluva Boss, his actual origins in the Jewish book of Tobit are arguably more closely related to passion. He was said to be the king of demons, who fell in love with a woman named Sarah and killed 7 of her husbands before their weddings could be consummated. Some versions of this legend involve Asmodeus possessing Sarah, but in each, he is defeated. It’s worth wondering whether the content of this Jewish legend was intended to foreshadow the depth of Ozzy’s true feelings for Fizzarolli early on.

InHelluva Boss, Asmodeus’ flamboyant style of dress is reminiscent of a pimp, which is rather fitting given his role as a businessman in the Lust Ring. Asmodeus notably has head and tail feathers similar to that of a rooster, and this could be to indicate arrogance or a bold personality, or it may potentially be a nod to avian mating dances. After all, Ozzy does have a few seductive musical numbers in the show, and certainly knows how to strut his stuff.

4Leviathan

The Demon of Envy

Existing in a multitude of religions and mythologies alike, Leviathan is consistently portrayed as a sea serpent demon, and is often depicted as the personification ofthe sin of envy. A few mentions of Leviathan also reference the demon as an agent of chaos, while others cast her as a duality of good and evil. Some lore seems to indicate that Leviathan was merely a word to describe monsters from the depths of the sea. The general consensus that Leviathan personifies the sin of envy begs the question of how this will be represented in upcoming seasons ofHelluva Boss.

How Helluva Boss Season 2, Episode 11’s Ending Sets Up A Season-Long Prophecy To Be Fulfilled

The explosive ending of Helluva Boss' latest episode sets up the fulfillment of a story prophecy for Stolas that came up in the season 2 premiere.

Leviathan made her brief debut in the most recent episode ofHelluva Boss, season 2 episode 11, “Mastermind.” Her character is physically divided in two, with her right side being more reminiscent of a sea serpent, though both sides are aquatic in nature. The two sides seem to be in conflict with one another, with the right becoming annoyed by Mammon’s flirting and repulsive eating habits during the trial even as the left side welcomes his advances. In certain etymological interpretations, the nameLeviathan means, “to twine; to join,”which would make perfect sense given Levy’s conjoined appearance.

3Beelzebub

The Demon of Gluttony

Strangely enough, despite being one of the most well-known demons, Beelzebub has only four brief mentions in the Christian Bible – all of which seem to be synonymous with Satan. In Jewish literature, Beelzebub is the personification of thesin of gluttony. Perhaps due to this sparse number of canonical mentions, few scholars can agree on whether Beelzebub is meant to be the prince of idolatry, the Lord of the Flies, the demon of envy, the demon of gluttony, or even the demon of pride.

10 Best Characters In Helluva Boss, Ranked

Helluva Boss is set in the same world as Hazbin Hotel and features a cast of equally complex demons navigating personal and professional challenges.

InHelluva Boss, this question was kept simple: Beelzebub personified the sin of gluttony, as is most traditional, while giving a brief nod to the Lord of the Flies interpretation. Queen Bee, a fox with distinctly insect-like characteristics, isknown for throwing wild partieswhere she encourages guests to overindulge. This involves drinking copious amounts of her very own honey mead, otherwise known as Beelzejuice. In spite of this, Beelzebub evidently does not support overindulgence to the point of self-destruction like that displayed by Blitzø at her party in “Queen Bee,” and even seems repulsed by Mammon’s gluttony in “Mastermind.”

2Satan

The Demon of Wrath

As a key feature in each of the major Abrahamic religions, Satan acts as the prince of evil spirits andthe demon of wrath. The etymology of the name “Satan” means “the adversary,” denoting his role in active opposition of God. The figure of Lucifer having been gradually melded with that of Satan has muddied the theological waters, especially in light of Lucifer’s status as the ruler of Hell. There is hope, however, thatseason 2 ofHazbin Hotel’s focus on the Overlords of Hellwill resolve this question. For the time being, the one absolute known aboutHelluva Boss’ Satan is this: “He is the law.”

Hazbin Hotel Future Seasons Will Explore Alastor’s Backstory, Reveals Creator

Exclusive: At SDCC, Hazbin Hotel creator Vivienne Medrano confirms that future seasons of the hit animated show will explore Alastor’s backstory.

Debuting in the newly releasedHelluva Bossepisode, “Mastermind,”Satan ruled over the courts of Hellduring Blitzø’s trial. His role as the personification of wrath is clearly well-filled in the series: Satan even has his own personal shoulder devil to talk him through anger management exercises. What’s more, Vivziepop chose to introduce Satan in as stereotypical a form as one could imagine, with blood red skin, a dragon-like head and wings, curled horns, and the body of a man. The only thing missing was the pitchfork tail - Vivziepop opted instead for an understated devil tail.

1Belphegor

The Demon of Sloth

Little is known of the Moab demon Belphegor except that he is meant to personifythe sin of sloth, or laziness. He is said to tempt the lazy with ingenious inventions and the promise of resultant riches. Belphegor was often depicted as sleeping, particularly on the job. He is never mentioned in the Christian Bible but was worshiped in the Moabite religion, a semitic, polytheistic, pagan belief system. In this religion, Belphegor is associated with the Baal-Peor. Baal is often conflated with Beelzebub and Satan, and it is once again likely that this is from a gradual melding of beliefs.

10 Things I Hope Happen In Future Hazbin Hotel Seasons After The Big Renewal News

SDCC 2024 included the surprising announcement of Hazbin Hotel’s renewal for seasons 3 and 4, providing possibilities for much longer storylines.

InHelluva Boss, Belphegor makes a fleeting appearance during Blitzø’s trial in “Mastermind.” She spends the majority of the hearingslumped over the juror’s bench snoring. At one point, Belphy abruptly sits up, seemingly about to interject something important, but promptly collapses back into her nap. Belphegor is portrayed as a blank-stared, sheep-like creature – evidently, portraying her as a sloth would have been too on-the-nose. WithHelluva Bossseason 2 endingthis month, it may be some time before more is revealed about the newly introduced Sins, but hopefullyHazbin Hotelseason 2 will shed some light on Hell’s Overlords.
