Let’s start withone of the year’s biggest (and Oxtobeer’s earliest) video game releases: theSilent Hill 2remake.Silent Hill 2will retell one of the most iconic ghost stories in gaming: the descent of James Sunderland into the foggy, forgotten town of Silent Hill, as he attempts to understand the source of a mysterious letter from his late wife. TheSilent Hill 2remake has met with seemingly infinite controversyduring its development, as is fairly common whenever such a beloved game is slated for remake. All those fears will come to pass soon, though, withSilent Hill 2due out on October 8.
TheUntil Dawnremake comes out just a few days before, on October 4. The first interactive horror effort by Supermassive Games, now better known for itsDark Pictures Anthology,Until Dawnfeatures many of the developer’s hallmarks: a terrifying story, meaningful choices, and an all-star cast. Rami Malek, Hayden Panettiere, and Jordan Fisher play a group of teenagers who visit an isolated cabin in the middle of the woods, where a grisly murder took place exactly a year before - anyone can probably guess what comes next.
The same day asSilent Hill 2’s release, on October 8,Alan Wake 2will also get its second DLC:Lake House. Far from the “what-if” standalone stories ofNight Springs,Lake Houseis expected to connect more directly to the main storyline of theAlan Wakeseries. It’s also expected to explore the connections betweenAlanWakeand Remedy Entertainment’s other major surreal horror output,Control.
Lake Houseborrows the pen name ofAlan Wakehead writer Sam Lake, who also lent his face to the character of Alex Casey.
Next up isA Quiet Place: The Road Ahead, a horror game set amid the film series of the same name. Featuringunique stealth mechanicsbased on the monsters' sound-sensing abilities,A Quiet Place: The Road Aheadis a new twist on survival horror for fans of the film series old and new alike. It’s scheduled for release on October 17.

October 2024 will also see several tie-in games from big-name movie, TV, and sports franchises,beginning withNHL 25on October 4. Coming out just in time for the actual NHL season, this latest installment promises increased realism both on and off the ice, with the new ICE-Q system for player AI. On the same day,SpongeBob SquarePants: The Patrick Star Gamewill see a release. This is a colorful platformer very much likeBattle for Bikini Bottom, just with a greater focus on Patrick. It’s being released to coincide with the series' 25th anniversary this year.
Next up isDragon Ball: Sparking Zeroon October 11. This is the fourth game in theBudokai Tenkaichiseries of fighting games set in theDragon Balluniverse. It’ll be followed on October 18 by another animated series adaptation: the beat-em-upTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed. A week later, the open-world survival gameTerminator: Survivorscomes out on October 24. The VR gameBatman: Arkham Shadowis also expected to be released in October, but doesn’t have an exact date yet.

Speaking of online RPGs, two of Amazon Games' major MMO efforts will see new releases in October:New World’sAeturnumexpansion on October 15, and the release ofThrone and Libertyon October 1.
As for strictly single-player RPGs, October’s biggest release is likelyDragon Age: The Veilguard, the latest in a long line of fantasy RPGs by BioWare. Known for their customizable characters, variant stories, and character romances,Dragon Agehas since become a major name in the RPG space.Veilguardwill be its first release in a decade, since 2014’sInquisition. It’ll be the month’s last major release on October 31.
