Ghostsstar Rose McIver discusses what Jay’s big Christmas moment will mean for the CBS sitcom moving forward. For most of its run, the popular supernatural comedy has followed the premise of Samantha (McIver) seeing spirits while her husband Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) has had to muddle through. But heading into a brief hiatus,Ghostsseason 4shook things up with a major Jay twist that allowed him to see spirits as well. Although he had some bigger problems to contend with.
In an interview withTV Insider, McIver was asked how Jay’s brief experience with the spirits of Woodstone Manor will change the dynamic between Sam and Jay moving forward. TheiZombiealum points out how Jay knows what the ghosts look like and actually had an experience that Sam never did, which is thathe could hug the ghosts due to temporarily being a spirit himself. I think it’s an incredibly pivotal moment in this series because Jay is a character who has built relationships with people that he hasn’t seen or heard for years now. And for him to finally be able to locate those people and situate all of these ideas in real figures in front of him, it’s got to change everything going forward. He has visual references, he has tangible memories of being with them and being one of them and actually having an experience that Sam’s never had, which is to physically interact with them because as a ghost, he was able to hug them. And he’s now kind of got one up on Sam in that respect.
What Jay’s Twist Could Mean For Ghosts Moving Forward
It Could Happen Again
The path that gets Jay to briefly become a spirit is complicated. In the two-part episode,because of some supernatural strangeness, the ghostly Pete (Richie Moriarty) gains hold of Jay’s body. The mix-up is fixed by the episode’s end, though it allows Jay to experience the abilities that Sam does and meet the mostly unseen residents of Woodstone Manor.

Despite the core conceit ofGhosts, the American adaption of the British comedy has mostly stayed away from a few key stories. One is introducing someone with the same powers that Sam has, another is allowing one of the main ghosts to pass on. However, the most obvious isJay’s change, whichallows him to see spirits. The sitcom has flirted with the possibility at different times, albeit never fully examining what it would look like in practice.

After years of clamor, Jay is finally able to see the Woodstone Mansions spirits in Ghosts season 4, but it isn’t as straigtforward as Sam’s.
Even in the two-part Christmas episode, Jay is more focused on returning to his bodybefore his parents begin to suspect that something is amiss and he hasrelatively little time to interact with the spirits that Sam seeson a daily basis. But now that the idea has been properly introduced, perhaps showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman could examine the long-term ramifications before the likelyGhostsseason 5premieres to really mix up the premise. It’s a start that leaves the door open for more.

It’s Still Lovely
In a fitting development for a Christmas episode, the focus is all on family. Jay is willing to spend more time out of his body if it ultimately means that Pete (Richie Moriarty) gets to see his loved ones in a roundabout way. Even if the much-discussed Jay twist doesn’t fundamentally change the sitcom yet, it still reaffirms the warm heart that works so well forGhosts.
