Marvel’s premiere super-team will be facing their literal biggest threat when theX-MenbattleGodzilla. Marvel previously announced that 2025 will see the King of the Monsters' world merge intoMarvel’s for a six-issue crossover event. The event will showcase the Marvel brand’s most popular heroes as they have to contend with the beloved kaiju in each one-shot.

The officialX page for Toho’s Godzillaconfirms thatGodzilla vs. X-Men#1 by Fabian Nicieza and artist Emilio Laiso will be released to comic book shops and digital stores beginning on May 14. In addition,Marvelhas released a thread of X posts unveiling new solicit information about the book’s story, as well as cover art and variants from Tony Daniel, Mike McKone, Taurin Clarke, and Nick Bradshaw.

The solicit reads as follows:

When a robotics firm draws a kaiju’s anger, the X-Men are called in to protect a world that hates and fears them from the counterattack of…GODZILLA!

While readers have watched the X-Men contest with giants like the Sentinels, they’ve never had to look up to stare down an angry Godzilla.

What is Expected to Happen in Godzilla vs. X-Men

The Story Explained

It’s been promised that theGodzillaseries could take place in different eras of Marvel history. The cover art features the classic Chris Claremont line-up featuring the likes of Wolverine, Gambit, and Cyclops, suggesting that this battle will most likely be taking place in the 90s. In the details released by Marvel, the summary mentions that the X-Men will need to protect the world from Godzilla when the world already has reason to hate them. Being a mutant has always been ostracized in Marvel’s comics, but even more so in recent memory in wake ofOrchis' successful hate campaign.

With the worldwide hate of mutantkind being such a focal point in the summary, it’s a strong possibility that this could prove to be a factor in the story. As much as the citizens are going to fear Godzilla, they may fear and hate the X-Men just enough already. Outsiders for the event could look onward with the satisfaction of seeing two feared forces potentially take each other out. On the other hand, a potential win over Godzilla could be enough to sway mutaphobes to sway their minds about the X-Men.

Our Take on Godzilla vs. X-Men

Can One Super-team Alone Handle Godzilla?

This upcoming encounter with the X-Men and the accompanying series of one-shots will not mark the first time that Godzilla is entering the Marvel Universe. His first appearance was inGodzilla, King of the Monsters(1977), a 24-issue series by Doug Moench and Herb Trimpe. The series establishes thatS.H.I.E.L.D. formulated its own anti-Godzilla Task Force. Whether Godzilla’s first appearance in the Marvel Universe is still canon (keeping in mindMarvel’s floating timeline through the years) remains to be seen.

That being said, this is worth noting because despite housing an entire anti-Godzilla Task Force (as well as assistance from the likes of The Fantastic Four, The Avengers, Moon Boy, Devil Dinosaur, etc),they were not able to defeat Godzilla on their own accord. Godzilla needed to be convinced to spare the city and walk away from it on his own volition. S.H.I.E.L.D. working with two of Marvel’s best super-teams wasn’t enough. One super-team may struggle just as much when theX-Menare challenged byGodzilla.
