As the development of theHarry PotterTV series continues, more details are revealed about the characters that will appear in it, and a recent update reveals the show will fix one of the movies’ biggest wasted opportunities, but it’s still a big challenge. After the failure and controversies oftheFantastic Beaststrilogy, the Wizarding World is going back to theHarry Potterseries, but not with a new movie. Instead, the novels are getting a new adaptation now as a TV series, projected for a 2026 release on Max.

This longer format will allow theHarry Potterremake to explore the stories and characters that the movies had to leave out due to time constraints, as well as go deeper into the stories of the main characters that the movies could only address at a more surface level. While the TV show’s production team searches for its perfect cast, the presence of one character from the books that almost made it to the movies has been confirmed, but as exciting as this is, it’s also going to be challenging.

Harry Potter TV Show Has Confirmed Peeves’ Appearance

Peeves Will Finally Get A Live-Action Version

The world ofHarry Potteris very rich and extensive, and some colorful characters from the books didn’t have enough luck to make it to the movies. However, the TV show is giving them another chance, and a confirmed character not included in the movies is Peeves. As confirmed by executive producers Mark Mylod and Francesca Garinder (viaHarry Potter),theHarry PotterTV series will finally bring Peeves to life, simply saying that they will get to have some fun with Peeves in the corridors of Hogwarts castle.

Peeves is one of many spirits inhabiting Hogwarts castle, but unlike the usually friendly ghosts from each house, Peeves is a poltergeist. As such,Peeves is all about chaos and mischief, often messing with teachers and students, but his favorite target is Filch. Peeves got along with Fred and George Weasley due to their shared love for pranks and defying authority, and the only ones able to control him were Dumbledore and Slytherin’s ghost, the Bloody Baron.

Harry Potter: The Hogwarts House Ghosts’ Backstories The Movies Left Out

The Hogwarts House ghosts each have intriguing backstories to how they wound up haunting the castle, but the Harry Potter movies sadly left them out.

Peeves' origins are unknown, but he came with the castle and thus has been creating chaos in Hogwarts since its founding in 993.It’s believed that Peeves is the manifestation of the students’ mischief, which would also explain why he has been in the castle for centuries and might never leave as long as there are students with a love for pranks and chaos.

Peeves Is A Minor Character But Showed Up In Big Moments

Finally meeting Peeves outside the books (and videogames) is exciting, butit comes with the risk of becoming the show’s comic relief. Surely, Peeves is meant to be a comedic character, but he has a role in some of the books’ biggest stories, and should also be part of them in the TV remake. When the Weasley twins prepared to leave Hogwarts while it was under Dolores Umbridge’s control, they gave a couple of instructions toPeeves to give Umbridge hellduring their absence. Peeves showed his respect for the twins, saluting them.

Peeves even discreetly counted on Professor McGonagall’s support during this time, as seen when she told him he was unscrewing a chandelier the wrong way.

Peeves honored the twins’ instructions and went on a rampage of mischief, which included dumping tarantulas in the Great Hall, destroying property, and locking Mrs. Norris in a suit of armor. Peeves even discreetly counted on Professor McGonagall’s support during this time, as seen when she told him he was unscrewing a chandelier the wrong way. Peeves’ next appearance in a keyHarry Pottermoment was during the Battle of Hogwarts, wherehe joined the rest in defending the castle.

Peeves’ way of helping during the Battle of Hogwarts was by bothering and distracting the Death Eaters that entered the castle, and he never messed with any of the school’s defenders. After the battle was over, Peeves flew amongst the survivors singing a victory song. Peeves’ moments in theHarry Pottersaga are mostly about chaos and pranks, but if the TV show goes as far as to show Umbridge’s reign and the Battle of Hogwarts, Peeves deserves to have his role in these respected.

Why Peeves Was Left Out Of The Harry Potter Movies

Peeves Was Supposed To Appear In The Harry Potter Movies

Another reason why Peeves’ appearance in the upcomingHarry PotterTV show is so exciting is that he was supposed to appear in the movies but ended up being cut. Rik Mayall was cast as Peeves and shot his scenes forHarry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, but every one of them was cut. Mayall toldMetro UKhe got paid for his work and then a month later he learned his character had been cut from the movie.Peeves’ cut footage hasn’t been made available, but director Chris Columbus has said there’s athree-hour version ofSorcerer’s Stonewith Peeves.

Rik Mayall passed away on July 18, 2025.

It’s unknown if Columbus’ director’s cut with the unseen and long-awaited Peeves footage will ever be released, but at least theHarry PotterTV show will now bring the character to life. Peeves needs to keep his mischievous and chaotic nature in the TV remake, but without forgetting that he is also pretty loyal and has respect for the castle, enough to join its defense during the Battle of Hogwarts.
