An iconic item from theBack to the Futurefranchise has been sold at an auction for nearly $100,000. The franchise kicked off in 1985 with the movie of the same name, which starred Christopher Lloyd as mad scientist Doc Brown and Michael J. Fox as his teenage helper. The movie, which was directed by Robert Zemeckis, follows the duo accidentally being trapped in the 1950s, where, in addition to finding a way home, Marty must encourage his parents to fall in love to prevent himself from vanishing out of existence.

The movie was a smash hit,grossing $388.8 million against its $19 million budgetand spawning a fullBack to the Futuretrilogy. The 1989 sequelBack to the Future Part IIsaw the duo travel forward in time to 2015 before returning to the 1950s to correct a cataclysmic mistake. That was followed by 1990’sBack to the Future Part III, which took place primarily in an Old West town in 1885. Cumulatively, the three movies - which were all helmed by Zemeckis - have grossed $964.4 million worldwide, though no further sequels have since come to fruition.

The item that was auctioned off was used onscreen byBack to the FuturestarMichael J. Fox over the course of the trilogy. Fox returned to reprise his role as Marty McFly in both sequels. While Christopher Lloyd did the same, as did Thomas F. Wilson as the bully Biff Tannen and Lea Thompson as Marty’s mother Lorraine Baines-McFly, the supporting cast was less consistent. In addition to Claudia Wells being replaced by Elisabeth Shue as Marty’s girlfriend Jennifer,Crispin Glover did not return as Marty’s father Georgeand was replaced by Jeffrey Weissman.

One of their latest sales wasMarty’s futuristic inflatable jacket from the 2015 sequence inBack to the Future Part II, which according to their listing, was most likely used in the scene where Doc Brown and Marty discover that the unconscious Jennifer has been picked up by the police. The item was restored and screen-matched to that scene, as some of the material had degraded in the intervening years.
