Jake Williams On Where Godzilla Is Headed Next
Anticipation forIDW’s upcomingGodzillatitlesis already high, given the novel premise of the announced seriesGodzilla: Heist– which follows a criminal crew using a Godzilla attack as a cover to pull off an ambitious robbery – andGodzilla vs. America, a series of one-shots which will feature the King of Monster rampaging through different major metropolises, with the stories for each issue being written by authors from those cities. Now, IDW Editor Jake Williams has added fuel to the fire of fan excitement with more hints at what is coming.
GODZILLA VS AMERICA: New Series Sends The Kaiju on A Path of Destruction Across The USA
At New York Comic-Con, IDW Publishing announced “Godzilla vs. America,” in which the legendary monster comes for the U.S. – starting with Chicago.
This will include more standalone series, but also a new ongoing IDWGodzillacanon. As Williams stated:

We’ve created a new world to explore, and we’re going to use the various series to show every angle of it. This take is going to let us do different stories, in different genres, that will feel standalone, but also serve as a smaller part of the larger narrative. But, just to assuage any concerns–in the same way Marvel or DC has a core continuity and out-of-continuity stories, we won’t stop publishing off-the-wall books like Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre.”
According to Williams, the publisher’s goal, first and foremost, is to tell the most excitingGodzillastories possible – and it certainly seems as though they are on the right track. In addition to new stories, and new kinds ofGodzillastories, Williams also confirmed a new design for the King of Monsters is coming– though fans will have to wait a bit longer to get their first glimpse at it.

Godzilla’s Already Stacked Year Gets Even Better, With A New Continuity & A New Look
Fan Anticipation Is Already High For IDW’sGodzilla
As Jake Williams explained, the time constraints involved in producing a cover for the Free Comic Book Day issue meant that it features “a more classic Godzilla” than the one readers will find within its pages. However, Williams went out of his way to hype what is in store once the issue releases in May, stating:
As far as the new design, what I can say is that Nikola Čižmešija (with an assist from Pablo Tunica) cooked up a take on Godzilla that is absolutely TERRIFYING. This is the biggest swing IDW has taken with a Godzilla design yet, and we think it’s going to really carve out a unique spot for us in the Godzilla canon.

Above all else, this is the greatest signifier of IDW’s ambitions for itsGodzillatitles;telling new stories featuring the famous Kaijumight be one thing, but a redesign is a whole other matter.
The “Godzilla canon” is vast, and IDW’s intent to make this version of the Kaiju entirely their own is the most exciting news about the franchise’s comic book renaissance yet.
