Naturally, finding such a rare combination of traits within the Jujutsu sorcerer community — an already tiny fraction of humanity — is exceptionally uncommon. While the story does not mention how many Special Grade Sorcerers have existed throughout the history of Jujutsu sorcery, at least three senior-level Special Grade sorcerers are present in the current storyline. The most notable among them, andthe most powerful sorcerer of contemporary times, is Satoru Gojo.
As the last member of the esteemed Gojo Clan, one of the Big Three Clans that have long dominated the Jujutsu sorcery community,Satoru Gojo stands unparalleled. Beyond the exceptional traits shared by all Special Grade sorcerers, Gojo’s anomaly lies in his extraordinary inheritance: he was born with two of his clan’s most potent abilities,LimitlessandSix Eyes, a rare occurrence unseen in 400 years. Moreover, Gojo is a diligent student of his craft, seizing every opportunity to deepen his understanding of Jujutsu sorcery. His unparalleled prowess earns him the well-deserved title of the most powerful sorcerer of the modern era.
As a youngster, Gojo’s exceptional abilities placed him in rare company. Fortuitously, he befriendedSuguru Geto, an equally powerful individual. While Gojo’s biological gifts as a Great Clan member contributed to his prowess, Geto’s intellectual dominance made him a formidable counterpart. Geto’s extraordinary intelligence allowed him to rapidly grasp complex subjects, theories, and tactics, often surpassing his peers. In fact, Gojo likely benefited from Geto’s tutoring to keep pace academically. This exceptional intellect rendered Geto a deadly threat. Another contemporary of Gojo and Geto, though not their classmate,Yuki Tsukumo— the only female Special Grade Sorcerer — is unique even among her peers. How Special Grades Are Defeated
Power Does Not Mean Invincibility
Despite their extraordinary abilities,Special Grade sorcerers are not invincible. However, defeating them requires an equally powerful and resilient force. In Geto’s case, his death followed a grueling battle with Yuta Okkotsu, another Special Grade sorcerer, which essentially drained his ultimate cursed technique, Maximum Uzumaki, to zero. Even then, the only person capable of delivering the final blow was someone stronger than him, his former classmate and only true friend, Satoru Gojo.
Similarly,Yuki Tsukumo was outmaneuvered by Kenjaku, the only person besides Gojo capable of defeating her. Notably, Kenjaku’s success wasn’t due to superior power, but rather his mastery of Jujutsu sorcery and strategic thinking. Indeed, as arguably the greatest curse user in history, Kenjaku leveraged his centuries-long expertise and the skills acquired through possessing Suguru Geto’s body. This enabled him to anticipate Yuki’s potential tactics, prepare countermeasures, and execute his plan with confidence when she acted as predicted.
Lastly,the great Gojo was defeated by Sukuna,a former sorcerer who was undoubtedly a Special Grade sorcerer in his time and, in death, became a Special Grade curse, the cursed spirit equivalent of a Special Grade sorcerer. Despite Sukuna’s immense abilities, he only managed to defeat Gojo by employing a never-before-conceived tweak of a cursed technique that he had essentially stolen from Megumi Fushiguro after force-possessing his body. In other words, Gojo was defeated by a one-of-a-kind move that only someone of Sukuna’s caliber could attempt, let alone execute.
The Evolution Of Special Grade Sorcerers - the Next Generation Might Be Even More Powerful
A Bona Fide And Two Potential Special Grade Sorcerers Stand Ready At The Precipice
As each generation of Special Grade sorcerers ages, a new generation rises to take their place. In fact, based on their development throughout the story, there’s every reason to believe the “Next-Gen” Special Grade sorcerers will surpass Gojo, Geto, and Yuki in power.Yuta Okkotsu, the most recently ranked Special Grade sorcerer, embodies this potential. Indeed, if there were ever a “natural” Special Grade sorcerer, Yuta would be it.
With no formal training, he demonstrated exceptional instincts inJujutsu KaisenChapter #0.4. During his first major team mission, he rescued more experienced sorcerers and played a pivotal role in defeating Geto’s maniacal plan. Yuta’s connection to Rika, the Queen of Cursed Spirits, enhances his abilities. Moreover, his diverse cursed techniques make him the “Swiss Army Knife” of sorcerers, showcasing his remarkable adaptability.
Besides Yuta, another individual often mentioned as having the skills and mindset to become a Special Grade sorcerer is Kinji Hakari. Early on, Gojo praised Hakari as one of the younger sorcerers who could eventually replace him. Hakari’s cursed technique is entirely based on luck, but under the right circumstances, it makes him invincible for a certain amount of time. However, it’s likely that before Hakari earns the rank of Special Grade sorcerer, Yuji Itadori will be acknowledged for the position first.
While Yuji didn’t initially possess the abilities of a Special Grade sorcerer, as the story progressed, and the consequences of him swallowing Sukuna’s finger unfolded, he has become the quintessential Special Grade sorcerer. Although his techniques may not be as varied as Yuta’s, his “biologically enhanced” attributes, combined with his innate skills, bring him close to Gojo-level power. This was evident inhis decisive victory over Sukuna.
While Special Grade sorcerers were not the central focus of the story, their influence was a fundamental presence throughout the series. Cursed spirits either feared them or, at the very least, had to account for the possibility of their interference in their plans. Cursed spirit users avoided them for the same reason. Jujutsu Society higher-ups found them frustrating because they rarely adhered to the rules. Meanwhile, less powerful sorcerers both admired them as role models and resented them for their extraordinary abilities.
The passing of Gojo, Geto, and Yuki won’t change this dynamic. The current and future Special Grade sorcerers will continue to disrupt and safeguard life in theJujutsu Kaisenuniverse.
