Magic: The Gathering Duskmourn’s Valgavoth Is The Perfect Choice For Damnation

The Elder Moth Is No Stranger To Destruction

Special Guest cards are validMTGcard reprints that feature special art by popular artists. The artists are tasked with recreating the card artwork to fit the current world or expansion of the game.Magic: The Gatheringhas collaborated with other video games and game artists in the past, likeJune’sAssassins’s CreedxMagiccollaboration.

Ito’s rethinking of Valgavoth takes an already terrifying elder moth demon and turns it into a Lovecraftian horror. In Ito’s illustration,Valgavoth is a flesh-like creature emerging from the darkness and shrouded in a black cloud. Many grotesque human arms reach out from the center of its body. The monster design looks like it would be right at home among the horrors ofSilent Hill, reaching for the player with its many spindly appendages.

The card chosen for the reprint is a fitting one: Damnation is a sorcery-type card that destroys all creatures beyond salvation. The Damnation card has been in the game since 2006, butthis reprint brings it into the realm of theDuskmournexpansion. All Special Guest cards also include a new flavor text that fits their new theme. The text for flesh-skinned Valgavoth reads:

Bound to a single house, Valgavoth simply expanded its boundaries until it consumes the plane, turning a vibrant world into his playground of terror.

Called the Devouring Father by his followers, the demon’s inclusion on the card makes perfect sense, asit explains where the creatures go once they are damned. Valgavoth is the creepynew antagonist of theDuskmournexpansion, spreading terror as he amasses power. Any creatures destroyed by his Damnation card will undoubtedly go toward sating its never-ending hunger.

TheDuskmourn: House of Horrorexpansion toMagic: The Gatheringcomes out September 27. Several otherDuskmourncards have been revealedbesides the new version of Damnation, setting it up to be an especially creepy addition to the long-running trading card game.
