Spider-Manfans have a chance to learn how Peter Parker picked his name and costume in a prequel to his upcoming Disney+ show,Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. While the animated show has some connections to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it appears to take place in its own universe. Now, a new comic series set before the events of the show will detail Spider-Man’s earliest days as a wall-crawling superhero.
Marvelannounced thatYour Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Manby writer Christos Gage and artist Eric Gapstur will serve as an official prequel to the animated series. While fans are no doubt well familiarwith Spider-Man’s origin storyand early days as a hero, this five-part limited series will give them a chance to learn about this new universe, including his supporting cast and some of his villains.

The cover art by Leonardo Romero shows Spidey in his first superhero suit.Sporting blue sweats, sneakers, goggles, knee pads and bulky web-shooters, the costume is very different from the one that fans know and love.
When Tom Holland’s Peter Parker was first introduced in 2016’sCaptain America: Civil War, he had already been operating as Spider-Man for about six months. Subsequent MCU films have given hints about how Peter got his powers and his earliest days as a hero, but there has not been a full-blown origin story for the MCU iteration of the hero.Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Manmay be set in an alternate universe from the MCU, but there are connections.Charlie Cox is set to reprise his role as Daredevil in the show, while Peter Parker’s voice actor, Hudson Thames, previously voiced Spidey in an episode ofWhat If…?

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man - Everything You Need To Know
Spider-Man will star in the upcoming Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man series, but what will the show’s premise, cast, and continuity setting be?
These connections mean that, for now, this is the closest fans are getting to an origin for the MCU Spider-Man. There are some key differences, such as Norman Osborn serving as a mentor to young Peter, rather than Tony Stark. The comic book prequel toYour Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Manwill give readers their first hint at other differences as it explores Peter’s discovery of his powers, his decision to become a hero, and how he picks out his name and costume.

Marvel and writer Gage promise that, although fans may think they know the story of Spider-Man’s origin, they will still find plenty of surprises in this new comic series.
“I’ve had the privilege of writing a lot of Spider-Man’s adventures, both in the comics and in the Insomniac video games, but one thing I’ve never gotten the chance to do is recount his earliest exploits,” Gage says. “The exciting part about this book is it’s a brand new take on those formative times. While this is definitely Peter Parker, the Spidey we know and love, he’s got a new cast of supporting characters – including Nico Minoru, who you may know from Runaways – and some surprising twists!”

Spider-Man’s Supporting Cast Hint at His New Mystical Origins
The inclusion of Nico Minoru is an interesting one that may connect to Spider-Man’s more mystical origin in this show. At this year’s D23 fan event,Marvel presented the first footage of the showthat revealed Doctor Strange’s surprising role in Spider-Man’s origin.Peter is bitten by a spider that comes through a portal created by Strange, a vast departure from the more scientific origin fans know. In the comic seriesRunawaysby Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, Nico is the daughter of dark wizards and a witch herself. While she doesn’t often interact with Spider-Man in the comics, her presence here and her extensive magical abilities could play a role in helping Peter figure out his new powers.
The origins of Spider-Man have been told and re-told countless times in comics, video games, animated series and two live-action film series. But with each new universe and creative team, there’s a new angle to approach the familiar tale.Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Manwill offer its own unique take onSpider-Man’s beginnings, and comic readers can join Peter Parker as he takes his first swings at becoming the hero we know and love.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man#1will be available on December 11 from Marvel Comics.
