Showrunner Steven D. Binder previews how Tim McGee’s new job inNCISseason 22 impacts the Major Case Response Team. Admittedly, MCRT’s most veteran member didn’t get much focus inNCISseason 21. Instead, he played a vital role in other storylines, including thedeath of Duckyand even Nick Torres' case in the premiere. Luckily, the upcoming year of CBS' hit procedural drama is trying to change that with aninteresting storyline for McGee that could end up changingNCISdrasticallymoving forward.
In an interview withTV Line, Binder confirms thatMcGee will be“angling for a deputy director position"inNCISseason 22. He doesn’t say why he decides that he wants to move up the ranks after over two decades in the service, but the showrunner reveals that in doing so, Murray’s character will discover something amiss in the agency that will eventually include MCRT. McGee Seeking A Promotion May Be Tied To NCIS Season 22’s Mole Case
Since Binder doesn’t discuss what leads to McGee’s decision to seek promotion, it’s difficult to say why he would want to move up the ranks now. For context, he wasoffered to take over Leroy Jethro Gibbs' position as MCRT’s leaderafterMark Harmon’s departure in NCIS season 19. Interestingly, however, he turned down the stint, explaining that he didn’t want the additional paperwork. Given this, whatever changed his mind about his career this time, maybe something that’s vital to his personal arc. Whether he’ll get the said promotion, however, is uncertain at this point.
For what it’s worth, this isn’t the first time that McGee and Vance will experience this kind traitor crisis within the organization.

NCIS Cannot Lose McGee
In the end, I don’t think McGee will get a promotion — at least not in a traditional way. Moving up the ranks means that he will have to leave MCRT, and at this point, the team cannot afford to lose another original member. He is currently the longest-serving cast member inNCISseason 22, andMurray hasn’t expressed any desire to leave the projectin the near future. McGee may be awarded a part-time job that is more administrative, but it won’t take him away from being a field agent, which he really loves.
