Mufasais theLion Kingprequel Disney fans didn’t know they needed, and while it was a good film, it’s arguably not the bestLion Kingprequel out there - not even the best one that delves into Scar’s backstory. In fact, there’s a comic book miniseries that shows exactly how Scar became the threat that he was inthe original animatedLion Kingmovie, and it’s a story that should be brought to life by Disney ASAP.
The Lion Kingprequel comic in question isthe four-part miniseries from Dynamite Entertainment:Disney Villains: Scarby Chuck Brown and Trevor Fraley. The miniseries was published in the spring/summer of 2023, so while it’s still considered a new story, it actually predates the 2024 filmMufasa: The Lion King- and, in many ways, surpasses it.

The miniseries explores exactly why Scar made the horrific decision to murder his brother, attempt to murder his nephew, and take over Pride Rock himself as its new king. It also explains how Scar gained the loyalty of the Hyenas to form his own private army, and even reveals thatScar knew and practiced dark magicto a certain degree.
There was More to Scar’s Lion King Corruption Than Jealousy & Envy
Disney Villains: ScarConfirms More was At Play When Scar Fell to Villainy
Anyone who watchedthe original 1994Lion Kinganimated filmknows that Scar’s driving motivation was jealousy and envy, which pushed him to murder his own family to gain the throne. However, that wasn’t the only thing at play behind his villainous turn. This miniseries reveals that the real masterminds behind Scar’s coup were two vultures named Kabeer and Krass, who knew that Scar would let them scavenge the Pride Lands with impunity if he were king.

The vultures convinced Scar to pursue his scheme to take the throne, and even gave him the means to do so. Kabeer and Krass introduced Scar to the Hyenas, who were already displeased with their leader, Queen Zuhour, making them open to accepting Scar as their new leader, and helping him become king of the Pride Lands. The Hyenas became Scar’s personal army, resulting in Scar actually succeeding in taking the throne and holding it for many years - and it was all because of the ambition of two little vultures.
It’s Not Too Late for Disney to Adapt This Version of Scar’s Origin Story
Disney Villains: ScarCould Become an Animated Prequel
Unfortunately, while this miniseries is an awesome prequel, it’s too late to see this story brought to life thanks to the existence of Mufasa: The Lion King. Or, is it? The art style of this comic is that of the original 1994 animated film, andthat Lion Kingfranchise is separate from the live-action one. Indeed, the animatedLion Kingmovies already have two other installments (The Lion King II: Simba’s PrideandThe Lion King 1 ½), meaningDisney Villains: Scarcould fit nicely within that continuity.
Disney Explains Why Scar Chose the 3 Worst Hyenas as His Lieutenants
Fans of Disney’s the Lion King have long-wondered why Scar chose probably the three worst hyenas he could have chosen, and now, they finally know why.
Of course, the possibility that Disney will actually make anotherLion Kinganimated movie tied to the original cartoon is slim to none, even if this story is just begging to get an official animated adaptation. However, at least, fans will always have this comic miniseries to turn to, as it is arguably aLion Kingprequel that’s even better thanMufasa.
