There arelocations throughout Earth-616, where the ethereal barrier between the physical and mystical realms is weakest;in addition to New Orleans, K’un-Lun, Kamar-Taj, Las Vegas, and the Florida Everglades are allhubs where the divine and occult bleed into our world the most.In places like these, natural and otherworldly magics are at their strongest, spirits and demons from beyond the veil can freely enter the physical world as they please, and specters and spells can influence the innocent with far greater effect than anywhere else. New Orleans is no exception.

In the real world, New Orleans and the French Quarter have long been linked with the supernatural. When victims of the African slave trade were brought to territorial New Orleans, many brought over the Voodoo religion from their homes, which eventually evolved to spread various voodoo and hoodoo practices throughout the region. Marvel’s New Orleans is no different, albeit far more mystically potent. New Orleans has hosted vampires, cultists, and loa, all pushing to pour out into the tangible world. Fortunately for the Uncanny X-Men, New Orleans already has a protector and one ofMarvel’s greatest sorcerers: Doctor Voodoo.
New Orleans Has Its Own Master Of The Mystic Arts: Doctor Voodoo
A Potential Ally For The Uncanny X-Men
New Orleans’s most popular superhero is easily Jericho Drumm, aka Doctor Voodoo; originally raised in a small Haitian village, Jericho left behind his twin brother, Daniel, and home to pursue higher education in the United States. Years later, Jericho returned to discover his brother had become a houngan. However, Daniel soon died and made Jericho promise to become a houngan in his place. Jericho accepted and, in time, became a master of his craft, later to be known as Doctor Voodoo:Master of the Mystic Artsand Voodoo Necromancy. Now, Doctor Voodoo has set up shop in New Orleans.
“One of the Best Pure Visual Creations in Marvel History”: Uncanny X-Men Writer Argues Rogue Is as Visually Iconic as Spider-Man (& She Couldn’t Be More Right)
The new writer behind Uncanny X-Men, Gail Simone, argues that Rogue is just as visually iconic as a character as Spider-Man. Could she be right?
Doctor Voodoo, much like Doctor Strange, is an immensely impressive sorcerer, although with a significantly more level head than his colleague. For some time after Doctor Strange’s death, Voodoosucceeded Strange as the Sorcerer Supreme. After forcibly relinquishing the title to Doctor Doom, Doctor Voodoo was placed in charge of the Strange Academy, a school for young sorcerers across the dimensional planes. As the leader of this New Orleans-based school, Voodoo has become an inspiring leader for Marvel’s juvenile mystics. However, now the school has been abandoned followingDoctor Doom’s recent rise as the Emperor Supreme.

New Orleans Has Proven To Be The Perfect Location
Today,Rogue and Gambit’s X-Menhave set their roots in New Orleans’s surrounding rural area. Within their short stay, the mutants have already come across supernatural problems. The team was attacked by a mutant-hunting hag and her supernatural warriors. Gambit is currently carrying an Eye of Agamotto, bolstering his mutant abilities with power from the Earth’s first Sorcerer Supreme. The Uncanny X-Men’s Deathdream’s own abilities are intrinsically linked with the paranormal and the unseen world of death. These heroic mutants have already faced New Orleans’s propensity for dangerous magics, but magic is known to be unpredictable.
Rogue Is Becoming the X-Men Leader She Was Scared About, And It’s a Good Thing
Rogue makes it known she’s scared of leading the X-Men like Cyclops, but that’s exactly what she’s doing, and I couldn’t be happier about it.
Fortunately, the X-Men aren’t alonein their fight to survive New Orleans’s mystical challenges. Doctor Doom may be the Sorcerer Supreme, but Doctor Voodoo and what’s left of the Strange Academy are still protecting their home. It’s only a matter of time until Gambit can’t control Agamotto’s power or until Deathdream becomes too lost on the other side; a Master of the Mystic Arts and Necromantic Magic is exactly what these X-Men need on their side. If all else fails, theX-Menhave a few mutant allies who have already mastered the mystic arts themselves.
