One blink-and-you-miss-it moment inStar Wars: The Last Jedishockingly reveals that Kylo Ren foreshadowedLuke Skywalker’sdeath at the end of the movie. TheStar Warssequel trilogy proved particularly controversial amongStar Warsmovies and TV shows, in large part because of the handling of Luke Skywalker’s character. In the first sequel movie,Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Luke was all but entirely absent. That was only the beginning of the complaints regarding Luke’sStar Warssequel trilogy arc.

InThe Last Jediin particular, Luke was revealed to have lost all hope in the Jedi and the galaxy—a complete reversal from how he had been in the original trilogy, especiallyReturn of the Jedi. Luke’s death inThe Last Jedithen proved that much more controversial. After using the Force to astral project and deceive Kylo Ren, Luke disappeared, just as Obi-Wan Kenobi once had. While many may have found that ending unsatisfying, one moment fromThe Last Jedireveals Kylo Ren anticipated this outcome from precisely that Force power.

Kylo Ren Predicted Luke Skywalker’s Death In One Surprising Scene

Rey and Kylo Ren’s Force bonds, wherein they connected viathe Force dyadand seemed as though they were in the same space together even when they were planets apart, began inThe Last Jedi. At first, they had no idea what was causing this connection (nor did the audience, as no such Force power had been seen inStar Warsthus far). Because the nature of the Force dyad and these bonds had yet to be revealed, Kylo Ren mentioned another ofStar Wars’Force powers: astral projection.

This power, which allows the Force-user to appear in a corporeal form although it is only an illusion, would have meant Rey projecting herself to appear where Kylo Ren was. Very quickly, Kylo Ren dismisses this possibility, saying,“You’re not doing this. The effort would kill you.“Kylo Ren was correct that this was not what was connecting the two of them, but, more importantly, this comment directly foreshadowed Luke’s eventual death in The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Most Dangerous Force Powers In Canon & Legends

The Force can be used in numerous ways in both the Star Wars canon and Legends continuities, and some abilities are extremely dangerous.

Luke Held The Projection For Longer Than Anyone Else Would’ve Managed

EvenStar Warshas poked fun at Luke Skywalker’sLast Jedideath. InLEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, Luke mockingly references using the Force so hard he died. Despite the jokes, this really was an incredible Force feat. Clearly, given Kylo Ren’s earlier commentary, this type of astral projection was extremely taxing. Yes, Rey was brand-new to using the Force, and this likely informed Kylo Ren’s belief that it would kill her, but that made it clear just how strenuous this Force power was.

No other Force-user could have accomplished such an extensive astral projection.

While it did bring about his end, Luke’s ability to not only astral project but also hold the projection for so long and engage in a ‘fight’ (however minimal the actual fighting may have been) is truly impressive. Undoubtedly, no other Force-user could have accomplished such an extensive astral projection. Although Luke Skywalker’s death inStar Wars: The Last Jedimay have been controversial, Kylo Ren’s foreshadowing reveals how impressive this Force feat was.
