One of 2024’s biggest titles,Helldivers 2,has dropped to “Mostly Negative” reviews onSteamfollowing several recent updates that have disappointed the community. When it launched in February 2024, Arrowhead Game Studios' live-service co-op shooter was extremely highly praised by many - despite its rocky start on PC - for its community-driven objectives and satisfying gameplay, and broke records for Sony. However, in the months that have followed, there have been manycontroversies and poorly received updatesthat have resulted in a significant number of players leaving the game.
WhileHelldivers 2still holds a “Mostly Positive” overall review score onSteamfrom nearly 665,000 players, its nearly 12,000 recent reviews are showing “Mostly Negative.” Many of the reviews on the game’s Steam page havecriticized Arrowhead Game Studios for unnecessarily tinkering with various weapons and making the game less fun overall, with LeoFinns stating that they’re “really tired of the game breaking and being gutted every other patch” and Tolstoj just calling it “Nerf after Nerf after Nerf after Nerf after Nerf.”

And Has Promised A New Patch
Arrowhead Game Studios has acknowledgedHelldivers 2’s recent reviews in a recentSteamcommunity post, stating that it values player feedback and is “always looking for ways to improve our community engagement.” The post went on to outline plans for a patch that will make “significant changes,” hopefully for the better, when it goes live on September 17th.
These changes include reworking Armor Penetration, Anti-Tank weapons and enemy armor and health values as part of an initial balancing pass, while alsooverhauling a number of different enemies to make them feel more “rewarding” to kill. Responding to complaints about nerfing weapons, the Autocannon, Heavy Machine Gun, and Anti-Material Rifle are all being made more effective, and additional improvements are being made for theflamethrower-type weapons.

The greatest co-op shooters span a wide range of gameplay possibilities, but they’re all united in offering a lot of fun to be had with friends.
There are other changes, which can be found in the full post, but for now it certainly seems like Arrowhead Game Studios is working to fix the issues players have withHelldivers 2and get back to what made it such a success in the first place. Whether the community responds kindly to this and those who have left will see it as enough of a reason to return, or if the damage has already been done, is yet to be seen.
