But things are about to change, andin Jimmy Olsen’s case, he’s getting a major update that connects him to the Dark Knight!
Dan Slott spoke withAIPTregarding his upcoming andhighly anticipatedSuperman Unlimitedseries. Slott gave fans all the details about the changes that are about to come to the Big Blue Boy Scout’s world, including a majorexpansion ofThe Daily Planet.
The iconic organization is expanding across the DC Universe, setting up branches in major locations like Themyscira or Gotham. Speaking of Gotham, Slott let it slip that Superman’s pal, Jimmy Olsen, will be setting up shop in Bruce Wayne’s backyard. And in lieu of a Superman Signal,Olsen will have a Bat Signal watch to alert Batman.

Fans familiar with Jimmy Olsen know that he’s been getting in over his head for nearly as long as he’s been around. As a photographer willing to go the extra mile, Olsen would often put himself in danger, though Superman would always be there to bail him out. To keep Olsen safe from the trouble he’d inevitably find himself in,Clark created a watch that emits a powerful frequency that only Superman can hear. The watch was frequently used during Olsen’s Silver Age adventures and while it was removed from DC history inCrisis on Infinite Earths, it ultimately returned.
Granted, Slott isn’t saying that Olsen is ditching his Superman signal watch for good, only that he’s getting one to help Jimmy maintain contact with Batman. It’s not a bad idea if Jimmy’s going to be living and working in Gotham. Superman tends to stay away from Gotham out of respect for Batman, and he can’t be speeding off to Gotham every time Jimmy’s in trouble. And knowing Olsen, he’s going to run afoul of a villain like Two-Face or Riddler sooner or later,so it’s for the best that he goes ahead and gets a line to Batman now.

While Superman doesn’t mind showing Jimmy limitless patience, Batman doesn’t work the same way. He’s only one man, and he can’t afford to take time out just to help Jimmy when he’s in trouble when Gotham is constantly under attack by villains. That being said, Olsen has a nose for the bigger problems facing a city, so he could ultimately end up being an asset to the World’s Greatest Detective. Someone like Jimmy could go either way, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens when he trades in hisSupermanwatch for aBatmanone.
