Riot Games has announced a surprise new addition to theLeague of Legendsfranchise - a trading card game.League of Legendshas enjoyed a strong few months, with the release of the second and final season ofArcane, with more TV showson the way. It also hasLegends of Runeterra, a free-to-play digital card game that competes with the likes of Hearthstone and is focused on various League champions and characters. Now, Riot Games is getting ready to expandLeague of Legendsinto the real world withProject K.
Project Kis a newLeague of Legends-themed trading card game developed in-house by Riot Games. The game features decks built around specificLeague of Legendschampions, with each championhaving different gameplay styles and abilities. The game will support both 1v1 and 2v2 play. The game will be released in 2025, with China slated as the first market for release.

What Is Project K, The New League of Legends Card Game?
Project K Features League Of Legends Champions And Battlefields
Interestingly,Project Kseems to have different mechanics and objectives thanLegends of Runeterra, the digital card game also developed by Riot Games. Players get two Runes per turn, which they can spend on different cards and abilities. Additionally, the game will feature cards from all ofLeague of Legends' various regionsand also feature art from various Riot Games and projects. Another notable variation is thatProject Ksupports multiple styles of play and uses a system of taking Battlefields instead of a player health system.

While anyLeague of Legendscard game will be extremely popular, Riot is staggering the game’s rollout across regions. Riot will launch the game in China and is currently seeking publishing partners in the United States and EU. Competitive and organized play will also be supported by Riot.As of now, we don’t know how many setsProject Kwill release, nor do we know how many cards will be released per set.

Our Take: Project K Enters A Crowded TCG Field
Project K Can’t Rely On League Of Legends Popularity
Project Kseems to be a cool project and it capitalizes on aLeague of LegendsIP that’s enjoying increased popularity thanks toArcane. However, there are a ton of new TCGs either out now or due to come out next year. Many of them, like theGundam TCGorDisney Lorcana, also feature popular IPs with crossover appeal.
The key toProject K’ssuccess will be robust, organized play and engaging and unique gameplay.Offering multiple forms of gameplay, with the option of up to four players, is a solid start. However, forProject Kto really stand out, it can’t rely solely onLeague of Legendsfans for support.
