WARNING: This article includes MAJOR spoilers from Creature Commandos season 1, episode 4.Sean Gunn, who plays Weasel in James Gunn’sDC Universe, explains the new backstory revealed for the Task Force M character in the latest installment ofCreature Commandos. While the DC Universe timeline is mostly a reboot, a handful of DCEU players like Weasel are continuing their run in the newly-launched continuity. Even though DCEU viewers followed Weasel inThe Suicide Squad, there is more than meets the eye when it comes to him, asCreature Commandosseason 1is establishing his origin story.
DuringScreenRant’sinterview with Gunn, the DCEU and DCU star was asked if the twist with Weasel’s backstory was always planned, even back when his character was first introduced duringThe Suicide Squadbefore the movie got carried over into the new continuity, or if this was something added for the reboot. According to Gunn,he didn’t know the depths of Weasel’s origin, but was aware that he wasn’t guilty of the crime of killing 27 children, as he shared the following:

Sean Gunn: I didn’t know the specifics of Weasel’s backstory when we shot The Suicide Squad, but I did know that he hadn’t really killed 27 children as he was accused of. James had always talked about Weasel as like a big dog, to me. He’s no more evil than any dog that you know - that’s what James likes to do with characters, is sort of [doing] a misdirect, where you think you’ve got a handle on who this character is, and then he’ll switch it up and, at the very least, give them more depth, so that you see where that comes from, and what the foundation of that is. So I knew after I played Weasel the first time that there was a lot more there, which I was really happy to dive into in Creature Commandos.
What Sean Gunn’s Weasel Comments Mean
Based on Gunn’s comments,it wouldn’t be shocking if this was a reveal that they were going to explore if the DCEU had actually continued, before the launch of DC Studios set upthe DC Universe timeline. If Weasel had been brought back for other DCEU movies or even TV shows, it would have made sense if they had revealed this exact twist about him. Instead,Creature Commandosgets the benefit of using this storyline in a powerful episode for Weasel, leaning more into the concept of being someone who is heavily misunderstood.
Given that the DC Universe is mostly disconnected fromthe DCEU movie timeline, this could easily be a case of DC Studios playing with the multiverse doppelgänger concept. There is no reason why the Weasel of both the DCEU and DC Universe couldn’t have had these exact backstories, as a lot of doppelgängers usually have similar histories, with a few differences. Time will tell if James Gunn will comment more on what his brother revealed about Weasel’s history forCreature Commandosepisode 4.

Our Take On Sean Gunn’s Weasel Comments
Gunn’s Weasel explanation helps theCreature Commandos’character be more sympathetic, especially by exploring the trauma that he is suffering from after witnessing the death of those kids. That is why it will be fascinating to see if and how Weasel gets utilized in otherDC Universe movies and TV showsafter the events ofCreature Commandosseason 1. With only a few episodes left ofCreature Commandos, time will tell what other layers the show will explore with Weasel.
