A romance is already kicking off inSt. Denis Medical, but the showrunners are not fully prepared to discuss it. Set in a hospital in Oregon,St. Denisdebuted to exceptional reviewsand high viewership. The show stars Wendi McLendon-Covey (Joyce), Allison Tolman (Alex), and David Alan Grier (Ron). Yet, while they make up the main cast, there are two supporting characters who have been igniting a subplot of their own. Mekki Leeper’s Matt and Kahyun Kim’s Serena have each been dancing around a potential relationship.

In an interview withScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender at theCritics' Choice Awards, showrunner Eric Ledgin and executive producer Justin Spitzer discussed Matt and Serena’s connection. While neither shared exactly how long it would take for them to begin dating, Ledgin promised"some movement" by the final episode. Since season 2 has not been written, there is nothing more they can offer. Check out their responses below:

ScreenRant: How long will it take Serena and Matt to get together?

Eric Ledgin: Ooh, never tell. Never tell. So, this goes back to the last question, but all I can say is that there will be some movement in that story by the finale. That’s all I can promise. We haven’t written season 2 yet, so I can’t say anything more even if I wanted to, which I don’t.

What These Comments Mean For Matt & Serena

St. Denis' Most Likely Relationship Remains In Doubt

Matt and Serena have been a potential couple since episode 1, “Welcome to St. Denis”. When Serena heard that a new nurse was coming in from Montana, she was ecstatic, and that was, of course, until she met Matt. The incompetent young nurse disappointed herearly on, and he has been hoping to improve his reputation ever since. His chances certainly improved after he defended Serena from a belligerent patient’s son, only to suffer an ice tea-induced injury shortly after.

NBC renewedSt. Denisfor season 2 ahead of its January 14 mid-season premiere.

Unfortunately for Matt, Ledgin and Spitzer did not provide much insight into the potential relationship. The cast ofSt. Denis Medicalcelebrated the season 2 renewal, but Ledgin is not willing to offer any information without starting the writing phase. Fortunately, his promise of further developments in the relationship is promising, particularly as there are stilleight more episodes until the season finale, which is considerable room for the two to grow even closer. After all, Serena is still coming around to the idea of Montana being a desirable state.

Our Take On Matt And Serena’s Relationship

A Slow Development Is The Right Move

St. Denishas regularly been compared toThe Office, and for good reason. There are some key differences, especially when it comes to the emotional stakes present at each job site, but the overall tones are similar. IfSt. Denis Medicalseason 2hopes to build on those comparisons, then it should pursue a slowly-developing relationship, which can replicate whatThe Officedid with Jim and Pam. That would make for a more interesting connection, and it would help to distract from Alex’s terrible love life. It is disappointing to wait, but it will be better in the long run.
