The studio behind theSilent Hill 2remake has just announced its next game in the works, but it’s not another project in theSilent Hillseries. Bloober Team’s success withSilent Hill 2expanded the audience for the horror game developer, previously responsible for hits likeLayers of FearandObserver.Although all of Bloober’s games come with their share of detractors, consistently positive aggregate reviews and plenty of media attention have cemented the company as a major player in modern horror.

A new trailer on the officialBloober TeamYouTube channel revealedCronos: The New Dawn, a third-person survival horror game with a retro-futurist spin. The trailer focuses on an older woman playing chess against a menacing figure in a bulbous suit, who ultimately shoves the board aside and reaches for her with spider-like claws that unfold from its glove.

TheSteamdescription for the game, which isset to launch on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2025, describes it as a “twisted time travel story” that bounces between the future and 1980s-era Poland. Players step into the shoes of a “Traveler” extracting the “Essences” of past figures to take them into the hellish future.

Bloober Team Isn’t Just Sticking To Silent Hill Remakes

Survival Horror Of Every Stripe

Cronos: The New Dawnappears to be following Bloober Team’s shift toward an action-oriented directionthat theSilent Hill 2remake signified. While atmosphere is still paramount, the game emphasizes that “quick decisions” in combat will be necessary to survive.

Silent Hill 2 Remake Nails True Horror Sounds - With One Problem

The Silent Hill 2 remake nails the original’s iconic atmosphere through its pitch-perfect sound design, but one small oversight could ruin it all.

At the same time,Cronos: The New Dawnproves that Bloober Team is still interested in the eclectic release pattern that’s always defined the company. The project is an entirely new IP, even if the name calls Guillermo del Toro’s horror filmCronosto mind. Following news thattheSilent Hill 2remake sold over a million copiesin its first week, the shift in direction might come as a surprise.

Our Take: Cronos: The New Dawn Being A New IP Could Be Great

Variety Is Always Exciting

AlthoughCronos: The New Dawnmust have been in development for a while, thesuccess of theSilent Hill 2remakecould still be good for it and other future Bloober Team games. An influx of funding and fans can help projects be more fully realized, even if success will ultimately depend on whether scale is accompanied by consistently interesting design. The popularity ofLayers of Fearlet the team go bigger with its sequel, but although I love ideas like a German expressionist sequence inLayers of Fear 2, it still feels like its spinning its wheels at times.

I’m Convinced Silent Hill 2 Remake’s Smallest Change Is Its Smartest One

The Silent Hill 2 remake makes some seemingly inconsequential changes that have a massive impact for repeat players and series newcomers alike.

Set in Bloober Team’s home country,Cronos: The New Dawnmight be one of the studio’s most personal projects yet. For all its loyalty to the original, theSilent Hill 2remake features some distinctly Polish elements of set decoration, and bringing things home opens up a lot of opportunities. It’s still likely that Bloober Team could return toSilent Hillin the future, but I do think mixing in some variety right after theSilent Hill 2remake is more exciting.
