Warning: Spoilers ahead for Silo season 2, episode 9, “The Safeguard.“Chinaza Uche’s Sheriff Paul Billings seeks out an unlikely figure for help inSiloseason 2, episode 9, “The Safeguard,” but there’s a good explanation for why Silo 18’s sheriff asks Judge Sims (Common) for assistance. Although the shockingending ofSiloseason 2, episode 9, ultimately steals the show in the installment’s final moments, the birth of a newfound alliance between Paul and Sims is still a fascinating component moment that will invariably impact their society’s future.

Both Common and Uche have been major players inSilo’s castsince the beginning, with the tight-knit yet sprawling ensemble short of options when it comes to parting ways. SinceSiloseason 1’s ending, their paths have become far more intertwined thanks to the uneasy atmosphere caused by Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) surviving the harsh environment outside after being sent out to clean. That very moment set in motion the beginnings of an emotionally charged rebellion, andsenior figures like Billings and Sims have been left to pick up the pieceswhile reevaluating their biggest loyalties.

The Reason Why Paul Billings Turns To Judge Sims For Help In Silo Season 2

Silo 18’s Sheriff tries to recruit the judge for the rebellion effort

With Sheriff Billings now essentially defected to the side of Silo 18’s rebels, he has actively tried to find those sympathetic to his new allies who can help let the “truth” about the outside world be known. Although the world outside the Silo is indeed uninhabitable without specialist equipment, a page from a forbidden book showing luscious greenery has become one of the rebellion’s most misleading motivators. Knowing thatJudge Sims' wife Camille has already quietly aided the rebels, Paul uses the page to lure her husband to the stairs and hands it over.

What The Mines Are In Silo & What Is Being Mined

The mines in Silo are often only mentioned in hushed tones and loaded threats, but the show does quietly reveal some information about them.

Paul makes it very clear during their meeting that Camille would have been the desired person to show up, but he was unable to come up with an official reason to summon her. Instead, the sheriff frames the conversation as a simple handover of an illegal item, but what the page shows is highly likely to rock the already shaky beliefs of Sims and his wife to their core. Paul is aware of this and hopes they will both decide to switch sides and join the rebels.

Can Judge Sims Be Trusted In Helping Billings & Mechanical?

The Sims family seems on the verge of siding with the rebels

Camille’s overall attitude toward Mayor Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins) has suggested for a while that she doesn’t agree with how Silo 18 is run and how it is handling the rebellion. Judge Sims has been far more loyal than his wife, but even he is close to breaking point when it comes to blindly obeying the mayor’s orders in the interest of the silo’s safety. His trust in Bernard has never been thinner, so the introduction of Paul’s relic could be the very thing that pushes through the judge’s decision to defect inSilo’s near future - along with his wife.
