I don’t want to say for sure, but it always comes down to what’s happening in the moment. And the guys, Toby Asher and Jeff Fowler, call me up and say, “We have this idea. What do you think? In where we can take Robotnik.” So it really comes down to that. I’m not against it, for sure.

I’m having a fantastic time and I love the fans.I love the whole lore around the piece, and the game and everything. So it’s a really strong circle to be in. And I love also that these new guys, Keanu Reeves and and Idris Elba and all these wonderful people are signing off and going, “Wow, these are the guys that every guy would love to be. Why are they jumping into this world?” [Laughs] They love something about it, and I think it’s the heart of this franchise.

After interviewer Joe Deckelmeier shares his own family’s love forSonic the Hedgehogand stresses just how strong a franchise it is for families, Carrey wholeheartedly agrees:

It is. That’s a very gratifying thing to be able to say that. I get the same kick from The Grinch at Christmas time. I know people are going to be watching it, and that’s an exciting thing for me. That makes me feel good. Andanything that brings a family out to the theater together is great. So, I think this is going to entertain people, it’s going to bring ‘em together and it’s going to heal shingles. [Chuckles]

Despite Dr. Robotnik’s fate being in question, Jim Carrey will reprise his role and Sonic 3 just answered two major questions about his return.

The initialreactions toSonic the Hedgehog 3have been glowing on social media, with some calling it the best of the franchise. The third film was already poised to do well commercially, butif it can also deliver from a quality standpoint, it could end up exceeding expectations at the box office. All of this bodes well for a fourth entry, but, as Carrey says, whether he will return will depend on what director Jeff Fowler and producer Toby Ascher can come up with in terms of the story.

In 2022, Carrey toldAccess Hollywood(viaVariety) that he’s “fairly serious” about retiring. Regarding his return, he said: “It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”

Our Take On Carrey’s Return In Sonic The Hedgehog 4

Carrey’s Future Acting Projects Are Now Eventized

Carrey may not officially be retired, buthe’s clearly being more selective about what roles he takes on at this point in his career. This means that any movies he appears in from this point forward will be special occasions.

If Carrey does end up returning forSonic the Hedgehog 4as either Ivo Robotnik orGerald Robotnik, that movie will have the added bonus of being one of the only new films in which audiences can see Carrey’s specific style of comedy. It remains to be seen whether Carrey does reprise his role a fourth time, but the franchise has clearly struck a chord with him, just as it has for audiences.
