Jim Carrey addresses his potentialSonic the Hedgehog 4return following comments about his acting retirement. After two successful previous outings, the iconic Sega speedster is set to return in the upcomingSonic the Hedgehog 3. Carrey appeared in the 2020 debut installment as Dr. Ivo Robotnik, a role he reprised for the sequel. He’s now set to play Robotnik once more as part of theSonic the Hedgehog 3cast, this time also playing Gerald Robotnik, Ivo’s grandfather, despite comments in 2022 that he would be entering a state of retirement.
During a recent interview withScreenRant, Carrey addresses his future as Robotnik in a potentialSonic the Hedgehog 4, which hasn’t yet been greenlit.The actor expresses a surprising amount of enthusiasm regarding the franchise and his role in it, explaining that he would definitely consider reprising his role depending on the story and where Robotnik, as a character, could go next. I don’t want to say for sure, but it always comes down to what’s happening in the moment. And the guys, Toby Asher and Jeff Fowler, call me up and say, “We have this idea. What do you think? In where we can take Robotnik.” So it really comes down to that. I’m not against it, for sure.
I’m having a fantastic time and I love the fans.I love the whole lore around the piece, and the game and everything. So it’s a really strong circle to be in. And I love also that these new guys, Keanu Reeves and and Idris Elba and all these wonderful people are signing off and going, “Wow, these are the guys that every guy would love to be. Why are they jumping into this world?” [Laughs] They love something about it, and I think it’s the heart of this franchise.
After interviewer Joe Deckelmeier shares his own family’s love forSonic the Hedgehogand stresses just how strong a franchise it is for families, Carrey wholeheartedly agrees:
It is. That’s a very gratifying thing to be able to say that. I get the same kick from The Grinch at Christmas time. I know people are going to be watching it, and that’s an exciting thing for me. That makes me feel good. Andanything that brings a family out to the theater together is great. So, I think this is going to entertain people, it’s going to bring ‘em together and it’s going to heal shingles. [Chuckles]
