The creator ofSquidGamehas explained why his TV series will be finished after season 3, potentially spoiling an aspect of season 2’s story. Hwang Dong-hyuk’s first installment was a smash hit all around the world, so it’s no wonder that season 2 has been so eagerly anticipated.Squid Game’s main character, Gi-hun, was left on a cliffhanger, which season 2 will see resolved. Prior to this next batch of episode’s release, Hwang has confirmed thatSquid Gamewill have only three seasons, stating that this was a natural place for the story to end.

Thetrailers forSquid Gameseason 2see Gi-hun reenter the games as a contestant, even though he had already won the sizeable cash prize last time around. He is doing this in an effort to put a stop to the brutal deaths that this competition revolves around, thus bringing down the entire operation. Of course, this will be no easy task, and the teasers for season 2 have already demonstrated the obstacles that Gi-hun will face.It seems more likely that thisSquid Gamecharacterwill die during his efforts, but Hwang’s confirmation about season 3 says otherwise.

Squid Game’s Creator Teased That Gi-Hun Will Survive Past Season 2

Gi-Hun’s Story Ends In Season 3

Though Gi-hun is the main character ofSquid Gameseason 1, the series is set up in a way that doesn’t guarantee his survival. The episodes could easily continue without him—a fact that adds significant suspense from episode to episode. Such tension will be exceptionally high in season 2 since it seems unlikely that Gi-hun could survive two stints in this brutal competition. However, while explaining whySquid Gamewill conclude with season 3, Hwang essentially revealed that Gi-hun will survive past the ending of season 2, and that his story will conclude with the series' ending:

“When I was thinking about the idea for the ending of season three, I think it sort of naturally came to me that this was the finale. I believed that with that story,I was able to tell everything that I wanted to tell through the story ofSquid Gameand also in the perspective of Gi-hun as a character, and I thought that we don’t need any further stories from here .”

Gi-Hun’s Season 3 Story Hints He May Succeed In Stopping The Games

Gi-Hun’s Goal Seems Impossible, But He Just Might Succeed

Though no definitive details are known about the story inSquid Gameseason 3, Gi-hun’s survival this far may indicate that he will have some success in dismantling the games from within in season 2.The trailer for thissecondSquid Gameinstallment sees Gi-hun attempting to warn his fellow contestants, urging them to abandon the games and be saved from suffering the same fate as the characters in season 1. Unfortunately, it looks as if this method isn’t going to get Gi-hun very far. The desperate contestants are willing to die for a chance at such a life-changing amount of money.

Whether this happens inSquid Gameseason 2 or season 3 is unclear, but signs point to some level of success.

IfGi-hun survivesSquid Gameseason 2, he must take a different route than simply warning the contestants. Any success he may find in stopping the games would likely come from the efforts of Jun-ho, the cop brother of the Front Man, who is confirmed to return in the coming episodes (despite his tumble off a cliff in season 1). Perhaps these two will join forces and actually manage to disrupt the well-oiled machine that is old Oh Il-nam’s legacy. Whether this happens inSquid Gameseason 2 or season 3 is unclear, but signs point to some level of success.

Gi-Hun May Live, But A Happy Ending Looks Unlikely

What Would Be Left For Gi-Hun?

Though it looks like Gi-hun will live through to the end ofSquid Gameseason 3, this doesn’t guarantee a happy resolution. At the very worst, the series could leave off with this character’s death, allowing him to survive to the very end before giving him a tragic fate. Still, even if the series' ending implies that Gi-hun will live on,it’s difficult to imagine him returning to a peaceful life. After all, theending ofSquid Gameseason 1saw him walk away from the chance to live in the United States with his daughter without the troubles he faced at the start of the story.

Squid Gameseason 2 will release on June 24, 2025.

If Gi-hun successfully takes down the games, it’s sure to come with a cost. His mental resolve barely survived the trauma of his first time through, andseeing more people brutally killed in diabolical children’s games is sure to push Gi-hun closer to his limit. It would be wonderful to see thisSquid Gamecharacter finally get a chance to be a good father and perhaps grow his family. However, after everything he has gone through, it just doesn’t seem like a likely fate. Still, there are two more seasons of this Netflix series to go, both of which will feature Gi-hun—who knows what could happen.
