The sun is setting onStar Trek: Lower Decks, but just because the show is concluding, don’t think that fans have seen the last of these scrappy underlings. The fan-favoriteStar Trekentry hasn’t just been a hit on streaming, but comic readers as well, and thanks to one publisher, fans could beenjoying the Lower Decksfor years.
Star Trek: Lower Decksfans everywhere received some pretty unfortunate news earlier this year when the streaming service Paramount announced that it wouldn’t be renewing the animated series and that the fifth season would be its last. While viewers were understandably bummed, more uplifting news regarding the series came out several months later.

IDW Publishing, which previously publishedaLower Decksminiseries, as well as several one-shots, revealed that it would be bringing the fan-favorite show back as an ongoing comic. Ryan North is returning to write the series while artist Derek Charm takes over art duties for the tie-in.

Lower Decks’New Era is in Very Good Hands
Star Trek: Lower Decksfollows the crew of the USS Cerritos, a Starfleet vessel whose crew is responsible for ‘second contact’ (ie the handling the bureaucratic necessities following first contact). The show largely focuses on the lower-level ensigns (the titular ‘Lower Decks’ of the series) and their adventures as they try to navigate their careers and personal lives amid the usual chaotic situations that usually befall Starfleet. The show was a hit among fans and in 2022,Star Trek: Lower Decksfinally got its first tie-in comic from North and Chris Fenoglioand published by IDW.
Even thoughStar Trek: Lower Deckshad a five-season run, it still feels like it’s too soon to say goodbye. Thankfully, IDW Publishing has been pumping new life into all eras ofStar Trek, from the original series to the continuity established in J.J. Abrams' films. It’s no real shocker that IDW would capitalize on the sudden ending by giving fans something that can help fill the void. Sure, it’s not the same as sitting down to watch the show, butit can keep one of the best entries in theStar Trekfranchise alive for years.

Fans Can Still SupportStar Trek: Lower Decks’With New Comic
Comics are a Great Way of Showcasing Demand
It really sucks when a show gets canceled, because beyond rewatching old shows, there’s no way to really support them. However, fans have a chance to really show that they want Star Trek: Lower Decksto continue by supporting the comic. Not only will more support keep the comic alive, it could potentially prove that the show is worth bringing back. Granted, there’s no guarantee for a reboot or new seasons. But as long as fans keep supporting the comic, they could haveStar Trek: Lower Decksaround for generations.
