NewStranger Thingsseason 5 behind-the-scenes photos have been released, teasing a potential flashback to season 1. Created by Matt and Ross Duffer, the hit Netflix series returned for season 4 in 2022, ending with Hawkins becoming ground zero for an Upside Down incursion into the real world.Stranger Thingsseason 5, which is still filming after entering production earlier this year, is set to pick up after a time jump, but behind-the-scenes photos from several months ago suggested that the show could also be flashing back to young Will’s time in the Upside Down.
Stranger Thingsexecutive producer and directorShawn Levynow takes to Instagram to share new behind-the-scenes photos from the show’s set, one of which supports the flashback theory. The second image in Levy’s carousel features the Duffer brothers, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, and an unidentified woman, but it’s what is in the background that’s most interesting. The image teases a return of the letter wall, which played an important role in season 1as Joyce (Winona Ryder) attempted to communicate with Will in the Upside Down.

The other images in the post, included above, feature Ryder and Maya Hawke as Robin, a mysterious red covering for what is likely an Upside Down scene, Levy on set, Brett Gelman as Murray Bauman, and performers in morph suits.
Stranger Thingsseason 5 doesn’t yet have a firm release date, but it is confirmed to arrive in 2025.

What A Season 1 Flashback Would Mean For Stranger Things Season 5
How The Letter Wall Relates To Other Season 5 Reveals
While Levy’s post isn’t confirmation that season 5 will feature a flashback, it does complementDuffer’s postfrom earlier this year. Duffer’s post features Schnapp as Will next to a younger actor with motion tracking dots on his face dressed as Will from season 1. Taken together, these two posts certainly suggest thattime will play an important role in season 5, with the current events of the show connecting back to Will’s initial time in the Upside Down.
Stranger Things Theory Suggests Season 5 Will Jump Back In Time To 1 Key Moment
Stranger Things season 5 is said to have a time jump, but a theory suggests that it will be one into the past, to one specific moment.
After theStranger Thingsseason 4 ending, Vecna is likely to return, but other monsters like the Demogorgon and the Mind Flayer are too. After becoming stranded there,Will has had a unique connection to the Upside Down and the Mind Flayer, in particular, and it could end up being this connection that saves the day in the end. What’s more, Matt Duffer revealed in an interview withVarietyearlier this year thatWill’s story inStranger Thingsseason 5will “tie the whole series together,” and deep connections to season 1 could certainly help to accomplish this.

Our Take On Stranger Things Season 5’s Potential Flashbacks
It Could Remedy A Will Byers Problem
It’s not unusual for epic movies or TV shows to go back to where the story began;this can help create a sense of things coming full circle. In the case of Duffer’s show, however, it can also remedy the fact that Schnapp’sStranger Thingscharacterhas arguably been somewhat underserved in recent seasons. Though he was a big focus in season 2, he took a back seat in seasons 3 and 4. It remains to be seen how Will will factor intoStranger Thingsseason 5, but it looks like audiences will be going back to where it all started.
