Our Take On Sugar Season 2

The Show Has Potential

The show’s debut season was not the strongest. There’s even an argument to be made that the genre-mashing and surprisingly playful tone of HBO’sThe Penguinspinoffis a better use of Farrell in the lead role, given that John is such a muted figure. As Sugar learns about humanity, often through movies, his character has a chance to grow and change. But the Apple TV+ Original has the style of a noir down pat. Where it falters, ultimately, is creating a world that’s worth investing in beyond waiting for the twist to drop.
