In an interview withVariety, creator Meaghan Oppenheimer revealed thatTom Ellis is unlikely to return for season 3. However, she is open to seeing Marianne return. The creator then elaborated on the purpose of the storyline, saying that it served to “debunk this myth that only weak or stupid women get tricked by narcissists and bad people.” It tells a story about “wanting to be loved that makes us forget ourselves,” which they have wrapped by unveiling his true face as someone “broken and hollow.” Read her comment below:

“I don’t think so. I think Tom was just wanting to do one season. I think that we wrapped up his storyline in a way that really worked for me. I don’t know where else we would go after that with him. I think we could bring Marianne back, maybe. There’s a lot more story to tell with her. But I think we kind of learned that Oliver is so broken and hollow by the end of this season that I’m ready for Bree to be done with him.
One of the main reasons that I wanted to do the show in the first place is to debunk this myth that only weak or stupid women get tricked by narcissists and bad people. That only silly women get run over by love. It happens to the strongest of us. Some of the most incredible women I know, their one weak spot is a man or relationships. There’s something so vulnerable about that. I don’t know what it is about wanting to be loved that makes us forget ourselves.”

What Oppenheimer’s Comment Means For Tell Me Lies
In the 2015 timeline,Tell Me Liesreveals that Bree ends up marrying Evan. They broke up at the beginning of season 2, during which time Bree had a brief fling with Oliver. Oppenheimer’s comment confirms that Oliver is only one of the bad characters that Bree runs into, but not someone she shares a real connection with. The show creator’s comment also suggests the nature of their relationship is about sexual desires and the need to be loved after being hurt.

Our Take on Oliver and Bree’s Storyline in Tell Me Lies
Theage gap is a popular trope in books, films, and television, and so is a student and professor relationship.Tell Me Liessees Bree dappling in the muddy water of her version of fantasy. Having just stepped out of a heartbreak, she rushes into a relationship with her much older college professor. While Oliver may seem charming at first, there’s almost always a twist.
Oliver is arguably worse than Stephen in season 2, and there’s no redemption for him since he’s just repeating the same pattern. As a professor who carries the weight of teaching a new generation, Oliver is a predator who targets young women. It’s not a surprise that Tom Ellis doesn’t want to play the character anymore, and it’s time for Oliver to leave Bree’s life andTell Me Lies.
