Jade, thedaughter of Alan Scottand a Green Lantern in her own right, has officially taken over as the leader of the Justice Society of America. Her leadership isn’t uncontested, however, as the team she’s trying to hold together begins to fracture.
JSA#1 – written by Jeff Lemire, with art by Diego Olortegui – picks up after theAbsolute Powerevent. The team’s older generation of heroes has vanished, and the younger heroes have split in two over which direction to take the Justice Society in.

Jade is the face ofDC’s next generationas she becomes the chair of the Justice Society, and she shoulders the responsibility of leading the team into the future. She aims to do so by embodying the team’s original ideals, following the footsteps of the Golden Age heroes who paved the way for her and her peers. Despite the nobleness of her mission, her teammates aren’t in agreement with her stance. Her biggest detractor is her own brother, Obsidian, who feels that her dated approach will keep the Justice Society trapped in the past.

The threat of Kobra is the catalyst for theinfighting between Green Lantern’s children. Jade believes that they should all stick together as one and come up with a solution to defeat the terrorist; Obsidian, on the other hand, feels that her approach is cowardly and wants to put a stop to Kobra before he commits any more vile acts. Their teammates each take a side in the debate, causing dissent among the Justice Society’s remaining members. Jade’s goal is to unite the JSA,but her efforts may prove to be in vain as the team’s rift deepens.

Although Jade’s leadership is being questioned by her Justice Society peers, she possesses all the qualities of an effective leader. As the daughter of theGolden Age Green Lantern, Jennifer-Lynn Hayden inherited his abilities from birth due to his power ring interacting with his genetics. This gives her the superpowers a power ring would normally provide, such as the creation of energy constructs. Jade was a founding member of Infinity Inc., a team composed of the Justice Society’s younger members. Beyond the JSA, she belongs tothe Green Lantern Corpsas Earth’s first female Lantern.
Jade, alongside her brother Obsidian, made her DC Comics debut in 1983’sAll Star Squadron#25 by Roy Thomas and Jerry Ordway.

Following a break-up with a fellow Green Lantern, Jadejoined the Outsiders, and eventually became the team’s leader. In this role, she fought valiantly in many different battles throughout the DC Universe. One such instance was when she led the Outsiders into a fight against the Titans of Myth inalliance with the Teen Titans, which can be found in 2005’sDC Special: The Return of Donna Troyminiseries. Jade is more than qualified to lead the Justice Society,but her accomplishments are all for naught if her teammates refuse to accept her guidance.

JSA#1 is an exciting jumping on point for fans who aren’t familiar with the classic team, and a satisfying relaunch for readers who know the lore of the Justice Society. What the Society stands for is being challenged in a unique way, and Jade is a fascinating character for DC Comics to put at the center of that. How the series unfolds, and to what extent Jade is able to prove herself worthy of the mantle of the historic team’s leadership, are the exciting questions that will drive at least the early arcs of the series.
