Two iconic franchises are coming together in the most unexpected comic book crossover event of the year, as Dynamite Entertainment will release aPowerpuff GirlsxThundercatscrossover. Though the two properties might seem incompatible at first, that is precisely what makes it a novel concept, and fans of both franchises are already on board.

In a post on X, @ToonHivereminded comic fans of the upcoming crossover,entitledThundercats/The Powerpuff Girls#1 – written by Paulina Ganucheau, with art by Coleman Engle – which follows on the heels of the #0 issue, which is part of Dynamite’s offering for this year’s Free Comic Book Day.

Dynamite’s “Powerpuff Girls” Meets “Thundercats” Comic Brings Two Beloved Franchises Together

Thundercats/The Powerpuff Girls#1 – Written By Paulina Ganucheau; Art By Coleman Engle; Available June 11, 2025 From Dynamite Entertainment

Forthis year’s Free Comic Book Day– one of the most importants days on the calendar for comic fans and publishers alike every year – Dynamite is offering readersThundercats/The Powerpuff Girls#0, and this unification of two unexpected hero teams will officially continue withThundercats/The Powerpuff Girls#1 the following month. According to Dynamite’s synopsis for the full debut issue:

SWORD OF OMENS, GIVE US CUTENESS BEYOND CUTE!

In the greatest crossover since peanut butter met jelly, The Powerpuff Girls travel from Townsville to Third Earth and discover the world of the ThunderCats!

After being trapped in a runaway rocket by Mojo Jojo, the titanic trio find themselves on a strange planet where their super-powers don’t work. Luckily, someone named Snarf is there to provide a situation report — and wouldn’t you know it, there’s evil that needs defeating! But without their Chemical X-enhanced abilities, what can Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup do against a foe like Mumm-Ra?

In other words, it will be a “fish out of water” story for the Cartoon Network icons,as the Powerpuff Girlsare literally jettisoned out of the element.

I Love How the New Powerpuff Girls Series Just Fixed the Original Show

The Powerpuff Girls #1 from Dynamite has adopted a form of storytelling that I wish the original and rebooted TV shows attempted back in the day.

Another notable aspect of the set-up for the series is the idea that the Girls will be cut off from “Chemical X” and depowered, which is an unexpectedly dramatic position to put them in at the start of this crossover. The decision to blend these two franchises might seem quixotic to some readers in itself, but at the end of the day, both are genre stories about heroes, and much of the fun will be finding out whether these characters can truly find common ground or not.

Can The Two Iconic Cartoon Franchises Combine Effectively?

For comic book fans, art is as important as story, and perhaps the most exciting thing aboutThundercats/The Power Girlswill be discovering how artist Coleman Engle blends the visual styles of both franchises. Dynamite Entertainment’scurrent ongoingThundercatscomic book serieshas developed a darker artistic palette, to match its more serious take on the source material. Judging by the cover of the #0 issue, arriving on Free Comic Book Day,it appears as though theThundercats’designs will be more firmly aligned with the classic cartoon versions, making their appearance alongside thePowerpuff Girlsfeel more natural.
