NYT Mini Crossword: 8 Strategies To Solve It Fast

This tricky little five by five crossword isn’t always as easy as it looks; here are a couple easy tips and tricks to beat your friends' times!

If you are still confused about what the categories might be,you can use the names of each of them in the box belowto figure out the answers.

NYT game The Mini

PANT

PUFF

This category is the one that made sense to me right away, which is normal for the yellow category most days. GASP and HEAVE were what gave it away for me,although it did take me a moment to decide between BREEZE, PANT, and PUFFas these all have air-like connotations. I finally decided that BREEZE was the one that didn’t fit in the most. The BREEZE is more static than a GASP or a HEAVE, or at least it isn’t something that a living being can do in the same way the others are.

GENERAL

UMBRELLA

Perhaps I should have gotten this one from BLANKET and GENERAL, as those are probably the more useful words as hints for this category. However,BROAD is an awful lot like a lot of the words used in the purple categoryand used to describe a particular body part. In fact, it makes more sense to me than several of them. However, I did not notice that they were all missing a component that BROAD still has, and I never came back to this category.

8 NYT Tiles Strategies To Score Huge Combos

The Tiles game for the New York Times mobile app asks you to use various strategies to pair matching visual patterns together to build huge combos.

PICNIC

PIE

This one made more sense and I did in fact have most of these words together fairly early on. I did keep getting “one away” which was annoying, but I liked the word PIE anyway.I also did not read ABC as the individual letters right away, I read it as a prefix along with ARS as well. That was an unfortunate read on the situation, but given how much time I spent learning prefixes from a wide variety of languages, I’m not that surprised that my brain went in that direction as opposed to the more obvious one.

BUT

RUM

This last one I was fairly sure about it, except for that I had BROAD in the list instead, as mentioned earlier. It was unfortunate that I didn’t pick up on the spelling, but BOOT could be in this category as a complete word as wellso I wasn’t looking at that as the distinguishing factor. I also don’t know that I would have thought of RUM(p) on my own, as it’s not a word anyone around me uses.
