PIXIE
TROLL
DRAGON, PIXIE, and GIANT all felt fairly obvious to me from the jump, but I wasn’t sure if it would be SPRITE or TROLL. SPRITE is a type of fairy-like creature, so it made sense for it to belong here. TROLL also felt like it could belong with TRASH and PHISH, although I wasn’t sure what the last word would be. Luckily, I did notice CRUSH and realized they were both sodas and thatTROLL likely belonged here more than the other word. I wasted a couple of guesses, but luckily didn’t lose.
SPAM
TRASH
Once I had eliminated TROLL from the pool of words, this one became a little easier. I saw SPAM and SENT and that looked way too familiar, so I looked around and eventually saw DRAFTS and TRASH. It felt pretty straightforward from there, but PHISH did feel like a potential inclusion here. Phishing emails are quite common, so it felt like it could be here - particularly with SPAM and TRASH. However, theother two wouldn’t likely fit anywhere else, so I went with those words as my guess instead.
NYT Mini Crossword: 8 Strategies To Solve It Fast
This tricky little five by five crossword isn’t always as easy as it looks; here are a couple easy tips and tricks to beat your friends' times!
SQUIRT
STARRY
SPRITE is one of my favorite sodas, so I did recognize it for what it might be right away. However, I do also like fairy creatures, so I wanted it to go in the first category. Figuring out what the other citrus sodas were once I figured it out was a little harder. I knew about CRUSH and STARRY, but SQUIRT was not a soda I was familiar with. It was by the time I got here, however, the only thing that even vaguely implied a beverage, so it was the right decision.
PHISH
TOWED
This was the last category I solved and the last bits of words available. PHISH feels like the most obvious one, and it took me a moment to connect LINKS to Lynx. TOWED made me laugh a little when I realized what the category was. BORE is also kind of humorous, but none of these words feel immediately obviousunless you start saying them aloud. However, that is a good tip for future puzzles because this is not the only time a category has been filled with homophones.
