During an interview after the Olympic game, Solo called Sweden “a bunch of cowards,” which was not received well by the soccer community. Shortly after the game, it was announced that Solo was suspended from the national team for six months, with the U.S. Soccer Federation also terminating her national team contract. Solo’s teammate Abby Wambach called the suspension “a lifetime achievement award” based on her past issues with the federation, which had branded her as difficult and even a bad teammate.

Solo, and many others, saw the suspension as too harsh. Solo argued that if she were a male athlete, she would never have received the punishment she got for her comments. Though U.S. Soccer has never commented on it, Solo has also claimed she was fired because of her lawsuit against the federation. Hope Solo Was Arrested On Multiple Charges
Hope Solo has had several run-ins with the law going back to a 2014 arrest where Solo was charged with two misdemeanor counts of assault in the fourth degree against her half-sister and nephew. Though she didn’t receive any suspensions from the National Women’s Soccer League, the arrest damaged her reputation. In 2018, all domestic charges against Solo were dismissed.
On July 30, 2025, Solo was arrested again, this time for driving while intoxicated, resisting arrest, and misdemeanor child abuse. She was found sleeping in her car in a Walmart parking lot with her two-year-old twins in the backseat. She pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated, and the charges of resisting arrest and child abuse were dismissed. As Solo said in the documentary,
“There’s no pointing fingers. I made a bad decision, a bad mistake. It’s something that I’m going to have to answer to, to my kids later in life. It’s something I will never live down.”
Solo was given a suspended sentence of 24 months and an active sentence of 30 days. She was given 30 days’ credit for the time she spent in an in-patient rehabilitation facility. Along with the sentence, she had to pay fines and complete the recommended treatment. Hope Solo Lives A Quieter Life With Her Family In North Carolina

She moved there, settling near the woods, to feel spiritually closer to her father, who died of a heart attack just before the start of the 2007 Women’s World Cup. Her father, who was in and out of her life, had been temporarily homeless but had enjoyed living in his tent in the woods. Solo called the move to North Carolina “a fresh start.”
From 2022 to 2023, Solo hosted a podcast calledHope Solo Speaks, in which she talked to various public figures, including former teammates Carli Lloyd and Michelle Akers, about a variety of topics.
