Derryth Bonecloak is an especially sad character inBaldur’s Gate 3, a struggling apothecary owner whose abusive husband has suffered a traumatic brain injury and now cannot help run the shop. The player can help her in act one by providing her with some Noblestalk,an especially valuable mushroom she can sell, but when met in her shop in the lower city, she still seems quite lonely and discontented.
Luckily,in the event that Derryth’s husband Baelen does not survive his last trip to the Underdark, it is possible to give Derryth a companionin the form of one of the stray cats in Baldur’s Gate. There are many to be found throughout the lower city, butthree in particular which can be sent to join Derryth at Bonecloak’s Apothecary. But which of these feline friends is the best match for this lonely dwarf?

Barsik’s Fanaticism Isn’t The Right Fit
This Cat Cleric Is Probably Not Right For Derryth
Barsik is a black-and-white cat that hangs out near Sorcerous Sundries, and speaking to him will reveal that he worships Sharess. Players may at first believe that this cat has misunderstood the name of the goddess Shar, similar to thekuo-toa of the Underdark, butSharess is actually the name of a cat goddess in the Forgotten Realms. Sharess’s Caress is named after the deity, given that her domain is that of hedonism and sexual contentment.
Every Cat In Baldur’s Gate 3, Ranked By Personality
Baldur’s Gate 3 has plenty of interesting and adorable cats for the party to track down, each with their own unique personalities and quirks.
Barsik is by all means a nice cat, who wishes to fight the Absolute in his goddess’s name, and is friendly to the players whether or not they agree to join their congregation. But Derryth is not a religious woman, as far as one can tell, andher jaded cynicism seems like a poor match for Barsik’s zealotry.Barsik would likely be happier preaching across the Wide than stuck in one shop, and there are other cats which might give Derryth better company.

Malta Is An Independent Soul
A Mysterious Feline With A Quest Of His Own
Malta prowls the area around thelower city’s central wall, an orange cat with a quiet, distant personality. Speaking to him will prompt some L.A. Noire-esque lines about Baldur’s Gate being the “city of lies” and the call of “destiny.” He seems to offer the player character some sort of test, and is disappointed if they portray over-eagerness to be friendly to him. Of the options,Malta is definitely the most mysterious, andseems to have his own objectives as he walks around the lower city.
Sending him to Derryth does make him happy, as he expresses in his dialogue if spoken to afterward. ButMalta is also a very independent cat, one who prefers to choose his allies rather than have them chosen for him. Malta would likely be fine either way, and continue his pursuit of justice, whatever that means. But there’s another cat which clearly craves companionship, making it the better choice.
Myshka Is Searching For A Family
Helping This Confused Cat Find A Home
Myshka is the third and final option for the cats one can send Derryth’s way, and is probably the best. He is already located right near the apothecary, and appears to be searching for his mother. He will ask the player for help if spoken to, thoughhe speaks Mriaer and takes a skill check to understand. The player can choose to say they are the cat’s parent, or send him to Derryth, giving him the family he clearly wants.
Telling the cat that you are its mother will cause it to follow the party for a while as they move around the city, but Myshka cannot be brought back to camp.
Myshka seems the most lost and alone when found in the city, and the most desperate for human companionship. And no matter which cat the playersends to Derryth Bonecloak, it will help to cheer her up and make her less lonely, so there’s really no wrong choice to be made. Though this isn’t a big decision inBaldur’s Gate 3, or even an actual quest, it goes to show how well the game makes its world feel alive and connected.
